Chapter One:
**
"Thank you," I said as the nice women behind the cash register handed me my nice hot cocoa from the coffee shop down the street. Today had been particularly cold today. The wind had managed to blow a few branches off of the trees, and the street light poles wobbled unevenly as the clouds rolled in. I on the other hand did not handle this type of weather too well. I'd always get sick this time of season when the weather changes from decent fall temperatures to winter breezes and when the air began to chill. But I had managed my sniffles and coughs this year with the wonderful power of NyQuil. Thanks NyQuil.
I walked through the quiet streets of the neighborhood, sipping on the hot chocolate I had gotten earlier this morning. As usual the streets have been empty, a few cars passing by on the slim one way road every now and then. Sadly, I have had to walk the past couple of days caused to my horrid car. It has been breaking down recently and I am not able to pay for it to get fixed in the shops, but I managed to get around town on public transportation. Taking the bus and occasionally cabs to get to work and to the grocery stores may add up, but for now it will have to do.
As I reached my small house on the corner of the street, I pulled out my keys and opened the doors. I shivered as I entered, I must turn up the heater before I freeze. I kicked off my shoes and placed them in the hallways, neatly lined up against the walls. I shuffled over to the kitchen were the thermostat is placed and cranked the notch up to 75 degrees. That's should be warm enough.
I changed my clothes into comfy pajamas, later making my way to the living room. I contemplated wether I should I read a book, or watch television for a moment before deciding, reading a book. After all, I loved a good novel.
I walked over to my large bookshelf that stood in the corner of the room and skimmed the spine of each book. After searching for a few minutes, I had just decided to reread the legendary novel called 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.'
I soon got lost in the book, my mind swirling around the tale of Huckle and his friend Tom. As my fingers flipped the few last pages, I had realized I had spent all afternoon reading. The sky had became dark, and the stars had shown themselves once again. I had headed to the kitchen, realizing I had been feeling quite hungry, and I began making dinner.
The house was silent as I stirred the chicken and rice in the pan, adding packets of flavoring into the mix every now and then. I had liked it this way. Living alone. It was peaceful.
As dinner was done being prepared, I scooped the mixture of rice and chicken onto a large plate. I walked to the living room and plopped down on the couch, flicking on the TV. I sat quietly as I channel surfed trying to find a good channel when all of a sudden a loud crash was heard from outside. It had startled me, to the point where I jumped off of the sofa.
I put down the plate, and turned off the television before making my way to the window. I peeked through the curtains followed by the noise of a car alarm. Outside, a car run into my fence in the front yard. The wooden fence had been knocked down, and my grass had been littered with tire marks.
I quickly ran outside.
"Shit!" I heard a voice coming from the car. The car door wined open and outside came out a quite large man. He looked about my age, with very curly brown hair and tattoos littering up and down his arms.
He walked closer to me,
"Em, sorry about that. I'll be willing to pay for it if you'd like." He spoke. He fetched out his wallet from his pocket and grabbed a few bills. He looked into my eyes as he waved around the money. Those eyes... They're amazing... So green and beautiful.
"It's all I have, for now. Please take it, I'm sorry."
