The soldier's words were drilled into my head.
"Make it alive long enough and I'll tell you."
I walked over and stood next to girl a bit younger than me who had brown hair and caramel brown eyes. She looked at me and gave me a wisp of a smile. I didn't look like any of the other Jews standing here, or what Hitler assumed they would look like, I have dirty blonde hair and swamp green eyes, or that's how I liked to describe them. We were standing in yet another line that led towards even more soldiers who were taking shoes and belongings and handing us striped clothing that resembled pajamas, I couldn't see any farther than that.
Suddenly Caramel Eyes brought me out of my thoughts.
"What's your name?" She said.
The second time I've been asked that today. "Nessa. Yours?"
"Adara." She looks ahead and swallows. "Might as well make friends right? Considering many of us won't make it out of this place..." She had a sad distant look on her face.
I understand why. She knew what was going to happen. Everyone by now knew what happened in concentration camps. Very few of us would survive a year, if at all. I didn't see the point in making friends. But I understood what she meant.
Eventually we reached the soldiers, they told us to remove our shoes and give them in return for clothing. I slipped off my shoes silently, but I heard Adara murmur something and a smacking noise, before Adara fell to the ground. I immediately moved to help her but the soldier began shouting at me incoherently. Adara was grabbed and pulled up by two soldiers and then taken away. I handed my shoes to another soldier and received my clothes. Then I was forced to strip, along with many girls, in front of all these male soldiers.
We stood for at least an hour, naked while the men inspected us, I felt disgusting and in need of a shower by the time we were allowed to put our clothes on. The clothes were striped white and blue, almost like a prisoner. That's what we were, prisoners. The clothing was slightly too big for me, but i knew I wouldn't get another set of clothing for as long as I was here.
The soldiers shouted at us and we were herded out of the building. After that, we were separated into different areas of work. Lucky for me I was working on sewing clothes. A pair of younger soldiers led me and a few other girls around my age to large warehouse, and then told us to go to designated areas.
And I began working...
And working.....
And working....
I worked for hours until my fingers were cramping and my stomach was growling, I was so busy paying attention to my hunger that I stuck my finger with the needle. I hissed in pain and sucked the blood until it stopped. Then I kept working. My hands started shaking violently but I kept working, I was about to stop when I heard a gunshot and a thud. I looked up to see an older man, dead on the floor, he had been shot in the head.
"Let that be a lesson, you keep working until we tell you to stop." A older soldier said.
So I quickly kept working. This went on for a few more hours. We were in total silence, in the humidity of this warehouse, with no food, and no breaks.
Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder and I tensed up and looked up to see the soldier with the mesmerizing blue eyes and blond hair.
"Stand up."He said in a threatening voice, but his eyes were gentle, and trusting.
So, I trusted him and slowly stood up. He then led me out of the warehouse.
"Move quickly." he said.
And so I did. We took many twists and turns until we reached a building, Blue Eyes looked around and then snuck me inside. Blue Eyes lit a match and lit up a few lanterns around the room. That was when I realized I was standing inside of a bedroom, I could only assume that it was his bedroom. Finally, Blue Eyes turned to me.
"I'm not going to hurt you, I promise. You're safe here." he said.
"Why are you doing this?" I said in a small voice.
"Because something about you is different." He replied simply.
"You said to stay alive long enough and you would tell me your name."
Blue Eyes chuckled, I enjoyed the sound of it which came as a shock to me. "Jesper, my name is Jesper." He said.
"You know you'll get killed if you get caught helping me Jesper."
"I know. Are you hungry?"
I nodded my head vigorously.
Jesper then revealed a plate of warm food and handed it to me. "You can sit down. Make yourself at home." he spoke again.
I hesitantly sat down on a stool and scarfed down the food.
"Nessa, you're bleeding."
"Huh?" I looked up to find Jesper's bright blue eyes were right in front of me.
He gently took my hand and there was a cut down my palm that was bleeding. He quickly cleaned the cut and then let me finish my food.
"I'm going to see if I can get you somewhere safer to stay. But tonight you'll have to sleep with everyone else."
"Can I ask you something?" I asked.
"Other than that?" He smiled. "Yes you can."
"Can you check in on my brother? His name is Jakub, we got separated when we first got here."
Jesper nodded. "Alright now I need to get you too your bunkroom, but I got to make you look a little beaten."
I tensed again and he rested his hand over mine.
"Nessa, I'm not going to hurt you. I promise." He looked at me with those big blue eyes, and I believed him.
He brushed blood across my forehead and cheek and added some dirt as well. "There."
Then he lead me to my bunkroom. "Until next time." Was all he said before he disappeared into the night.
I walked inside and heard my name.
I looked up and saw Adara, she had a black eye but other than that she seemed like her normal perky self.
"You can sleep with me." She said, motioning me over.
I laid down next to her in our small little bunk, and fell into a fitful sleep.
