I feel someone stroking my hair and groan in annoyance, "Wake up, Avery" says a gentle voice "MOTHER?" I sit up very suddenly and look towards my Mother, "I'm afraid not, sorry Avery. Breakfast is ready by the way" oh it is just Miss Roberts. "Oh, Hello Miss Roberts" I look up at her and she smiles kindly down at me "Breakfast time" she repeats,"Okay, I'll be down soon, I'll just go and get dressed" I reply, reluctantly getting up. Miss Roberts leaves and after brushing a stray lock of hair away from my mothers face I leave too. When I'm in my room I change into a long sleeved shirt and pants that I bought the last time Father took Mother and I into town to go shopping, I had a lot of trouble smuggling them back home, then I do some exercises before quickly shrugging into a dress when Mrs Roberts calls out my name. I rush down the stairs, still trying to get comfortable in this ridiculous dress, I rush into the dining room and sit down for breakfast. Mr Marcus places eggs and bacon with cooked tomatoes along with some toast and jams on the table and I help myself to a good portion of everything. "How are you going with your French?" Mrs Roberts asks and I look up from my meal "ghgsjdgfh! I reply with my mouth full " Don't speak with your mouth full, do you not remember anything that I taught you in etiquette?" Mrs Roberts scolds and I obligingly swallow before replying to her first question "Je suis bien avec French"
"Very good Avery!"
"Thanky-" I am interrupted by a knock on the front door, a maid rushes to open it but I get there first, curious to know who it is and hoping that it is a doctor. "Tha-"
"Hello Avery! How is my little girl?" Father grins in delight and holds open his arms, expecting me to jump into them with delight. "Oh, Hello Father" I say downheartedly "That's no way to greet your Father! I just got back from this quaint little village in Northern Germany and I brought back these for you" Father hands me a little parcel and I brighten up a bit "Thankyou Father, breakfast is on the table if you want some" I offer, leading Father into the dining room. "Ah, Mrs Roberts, how is my little Avery going with her lessons?" asks Father before sitting down and helping himself to some food "very well Henry, Very well indeed!" I sit down in my place and unwrap the parcel "Oh thankyou Father!" I cry in joy and hold up a dagger with a beautifully made blade that had been folded so many times when it had been made that it now had swirls and whorls in the metal
It's sheath had been made out of leather that was simple yet beautiful in its own way. "You're welcome kid, just don't show your Mother" Father ruffles my hair, not noticing my suddenly downcast look, "speaking of your Mother, where is she?" Father asks "umm.. well about that..uh.." Mrs Roberts stutters "Mother is sick. She hasn't woken up since she collapsed last night at dinner" I whisper and Father turns pale "where is she? Did you call for a doctor?" he demands "Mothers upstairs and yes the doctor should be here soon" I reply. Father stands up and rushes upstairs to Mothers room, I stay seated, not knowing what to do "why don't you go and put your....umm...present? Away" Mrs Roberts suggests and I blindly do what she says. Once upstairs I collapse onto my four-poster bed and wonder what I should do, I stay like this for an hour or so before finally getting up and shutting the door, locking it behind me, then I take off my dress, which leaves me in my shirt and pants, and start doing some more combat and knife exercises to keep my mind away from whats happened. After a few hours I stop, beads of sweat glisten on my brow and I wipe them away before unlocking the door and calling one of the maids to boil some hot water for a bath. When the bath has been made I re-lock the door go into the bathroom and strip off my clothes, sinking into the hot water and scrubbing at my dirty body. After I have cleaned myself I relax, closing my eyes I lazily swirl my hand in a circle in the water, I am about to drop off to sleep when I suddenly feel a strong pull in my chest "huh? I hope I don't have the same thing as Mother" I yawn and open my eyes. "Arrrrgggghhh" I yelp "What on earth? what's happening? Who is playing a trick on me?" I yell "Miss are you alright?" knocks come from my bedroom door "wherever you are hiding come out, I know you are playing a trick on me COME OUT!!!!" I yell again at the air "Miss?" Mr Marcus is now at the door with the maids I look around one final time to make sure there really isn't anyone there before calling out "it's okay, I just had a nightmare. Has the doctor come yet?" the knocking subsides "Yes miss, he came a few minutes ago, he looked at your Mother and said that she had a bad cold" Mr Marcus replies relieved that I am okay, "Okay then, thankyou Mr Marcus" I call out again before looking towards the water and my hand. "Okay, how on earth am I doing this?" I wonder because when I opened my eyes I found that the water had been spiraling upwards towards my hand that I had lifted. I lower my hand and the water lowers with it "Oh my giddy-aunt how is this happening?" I ask in confusion to the empty air, suddenly the water leaps up and starts twirling around my bathroom "No...No don't do that come back" I whisper, not wanting to attract the attention of the servants, the water reluctantly obeys my commands as I lift up my hands and beckon it back to me. I sigh with relief when it slops back into the bathtub then I decide to have some fun and raise some of the water before conducting it around the room in time to the waving of my hands. "Avery, your Mother is awake, she wants to talk to you!" Father shouts and my concentration slips, resulting in the water dropping to the ground and splashing everywhere oh no I think "Coming father, I'll be there in a bit!" I shout back before getting out of the tub and starting to clean up the mess I had made.
