The animals called a meeting, huddled around the baby girl in the woods. Her human mother had left the girl there. The thought of it made Lakota so angry he wanted to get into the human world and teach them right and wrong.
Humans-stupid creatures! All they care about are themselves, and they have so many problems.
Lakota was lost in his thoughts when a wolf, Maxie, stepped forwards and curled her long tail around the little girl, who was sleeping.
"Don't think for a moment that this girl is going to be left to die," Maxie hissed, her eyes dark and dangerous. Than Lakota remembered-her own pups had died a few days ago-by human hunters. She had every reason to hate humans, but motherly instinct led to realize that this had been done for a reason.
Lakota wanted to argue, but there was truly no fighting with Maxie.
"Does anyone object to my decision?" Maxie asked. A large elk opened his mouth to argue with her, but a glare from Lakota shut him up.
"Very well. I shall care for this girl, and we will raise her as our own."
"Wait...what's that?" Lakota dared to ask, stepping forwards. He nosed at her neck, and a thread with a wrinkled paper dangled from the makeshift necklace.
'Nova,'
Lakota straightened. "The girl's name is Nova."
