Everything was copacetic, at least for a while. Most of the forest creatures were amazed at how quickly the little girl grew. Many hadn't even thought she would survive the first night.
But little Nova survived, all right. And not only did she survive, she thrived. Every day she would impress all the animals by her incredible strength and grace.
By the time she was three, she could climb the tallest trees in the forest.
By the time she was seven, she could wrestle a grown man to the ground without breaking a sweat.
The animals trained her, and with Lakota's help, she learned of the nature spirits-how everything in the forest had a reason, had a soul, had a purpose. And she did, she understood. Lakota was honestly impressed. This girl was intelligent-much smarter than he'd thought a human could be.
At dawn, he'd watch with amusement as she climbed to the top of the tallest tree, gazing in wonder at the sun, as the colors reached out at the onyx sky and invaded with their light. The pink clouds would drift from the horizon and spill into the sky, casting the first strike of light across the forest.
At dusk, Lakota would sometimes catch her talking to fireflies in the dark. She'd tell them stories, and loved their tinkling laughs when she amused them.
It was a happy life, there in the forest.
