As time slowly goes by, I realize this situation I am in. I am dying, I have leukemia, and my dad abandoned me when I needed him most.Joey, the boy next door, was dying even faster than I. I tried to stop it all, the pain and all of the thoughts. "Hey, you okay?" I looked up at him as I brought myself back to earth. "Yeah, everything is fine. I'm just thinking, that's all." He smiled as he reached out his hand. My left hand tangled with his right. This was weird, it felt normal, as if I had known him for years. I had started the radiation therapy a week after our first date. It was all okay at first, but then I got real sick and threw up. It wasn't good, it was like someone poisoned my body. One day, I was crying because of how much pain I was feeling.
Joey sat next to me as he hugged me. He made sure that he would be there for me, all the time. But, it started getting bad. One night, Joey needed to use the restroom. But when he got up, he had collapsed on to the floor. Ever since last week, he couldn't walk and his body started to fail him.
"Don't you worried Lucy, I'll be fine. Its just the radiation getting to me, that's all." I wish I could have believed him. The thing was, that he wasn't going to be fine. It was serious. I heard the doctor talk to someone one night while they were in the room. "He doesn't have much time left on his hands. He is expected to die within the next two weeks." I cried that who night. "Why must people die! Why, when I finnaly feel like I am right, you have to take it away from me!" I was yelling, yelling at God.
I knew that joey was listening to my conversation. But I didn't even care. "Please, don't do this to him. He's good! He's one of you!" Tears ran down my face as he used some strength to get to my bed. "Lucy, its okay. Its going to be fine." I looked at him with anger and sadness. "Please don't go. I was just starting to like you." He only smiled. He leaned in and placed a kiss on my lips. Soft, gentle, and friendly.
It was my first kiss, and sadly my last. For I knew I didn't have much time either. "I will see you in a much better place. Okay?" I broke down. "Don't do this! Don't die! Please don't take him! Please! He doesn't deserve this!" The nurse came in the door after hearing me yell. They had to wheel me out of the room. The room of which my best friend stayed.
