Hey! This is my new story! Vote!
I looked up at the whiteboard as I quickly copied down the lecture outline down on a piece of loose leaf. American Studies was a boring class, but it wasn't too bad. Unlike the rest of the students in the class, I actually had the ability to resist the urge to sleep. I glanced around and saw that half of the students were nodding off behind large textbooks. To my right, Danny was asleep, snoring lightly. His honey colored hair fell across his forehead, making him look like a peaceful child. The image of him was almost too darling to disturb. Almost.
I prodded him hard with the backend of my pen. He started awake with a small jump and look wildly about him, searching for the culprit. I bit my lip and covered my smile with my hand. His sweet baby blue eyes fell on me and they narrowed. With a mischievous look that had me worried the second I saw it, he jabbed me back. I jumped and nearly fell out of my seat.
Before I could properly retaliate, the bell rang, saving Danny in the most clichéd way possible. But even if the jabbing wars had escalated, it was unlikely that Mrs. Marlow would have noticed anything out of the ordinary. She gave boring lectures, ones that only I actually paid attention to, and buried her long nose in her note pages.
Once out in the hall, Danny turned to me, "You could have just let me sleep for another minute."
I threw him a dirty look. "Is there actually any class that you do pay attention to?"
He smiled broadly and put on a proud air. "Nope."
I shook my head sadly. "You're hopeless."
"Well, sis, as long as I got you, I don't need my own notes."
I rolled my eyes at "sis", a title which would have sounded really odd to a stranger.
Why is that strange? Well, for starters, we look nothing alike. Danny is blonde, with sky blue eyes like round glass orbs. I have dark hair, matched with dark almond-shaped eyes. He's white, while I look Asian.
We aren't really siblings, at least not in the biological sense. Danny's parents had taken me in when I was seven, so I don't really remember anything about my life before Danny. Either way, I didn't really care. Mom and Dad were the best things I could have wished for. They've never treated me as an outsider though I look like one. They've given me love and a reason to love back.
Mom is a news anchor and Dad works as a journalist, so their names get circled around a lot. We live in a nice apartment made for four. We aren't rich, but we live comfortably enough, which is all I'll ever ask for.
Danny is more like a best friend than a brother to me. Sure, sometimes he's an ass, but he's never rough or harsh with me. In fact, I don't think he's ever been mean to anyone. He's just an all around nice guy. That and his adorable looks make him really popular amongst the girls in our grade. Flirting girls flitting around everywhere he is can get really annoying. But hey, you can't have everything going for you in life.
I was startled back to reality by my Cobra Starship ring tone. Danny watched me as I pulled out my phone and snapped it open.
"Yes? This is Edona River speaking."
A soft, rich chuckle drifted through from the other side. "Why do you always sound so dreadfully formal?"
"Oh, Cameron, it's you. What do you need?"
"Don, why do always assume there's trouble when I call?"
My mouth mashed into a grim line. "Because as much as I like you, there does tend to be trouble whenever you call."
Another soft laugh. "You like me, huh?"
I rolled my eyes. "I take that back. Anything I say will only inflate that air head of yours."
