I blinked my eyes groggily and twisted around in my bed for a few moments, not wanting to get up. Slanting rays of cold white sunlight kept me from sleeping in, so I gave it up and shoved myself into a sitting position. I gradually wised up to the fact that this wasn't my room and I wasn't in my bed. I scrambled out of the covers, utterly alarmed, before I remembered all that happened last night. However, the memories didn't help me relax from my tensed up position one bit.
Last night. Royals. Werewolves. Vampires. A bar fight. A creepy encounter in a back alleyway. Kaeli breaking her arm. Danny screaming his lungs out at Cameron.
Oh shit. Danny.
I checked my watch and saw that it was already nine in the morning. Jesus, last night must have taken a lot out of me. I slid off the bed and walked to the bathroom on unsteady feet. I splashed cool water on my face and looked up at my reflection. I had the worst case of bed head in the history of bed heads. I had forgotten to take my hair out of the bun and it was now sticking out in strange directions. I yanked my fingers desperately through my black hair before giving it up in despair.
I headed out of Cameron's bedroom on steadier feet, now fully awake. I found Cameron fully dressed in a casual polo and some slacks, yammering away on his cell phone like a hummingbird on steroids. He waved to me when he saw me, but kept on talking.
I sat down on a barstool next to him, propping my elbows on the kitchen counter, and waited for him patiently to finish. I tried to listen in on his phone conversation, but after a few moments, I realized he was speaking in French and I wasn't fluent enough to catch most of what he was saying.
After a while, he snapped the phone shut and turned to me, "Well, Danny is perfectly fine. According to my man, he slept like a pig."
I laughed. "Did he actually watch my brother sleep? That's highly disturbing on many levels."
"I agree, but I figured you prized safety over general politeness and privacy when it came to your brother." I nodded and he continued, "The bar was unharmed. Neither of the royals returned to it that night. I think a few partiers suffered through third-degree burns from the dancers, but it was nothing Santi couldn't deal with. I had someone follow the werewolves. They spent most of their night cavorting around as wolves and no humans were harmed. The Fae that was supposed to be tracking Andrei lost sight of him after a while and I decided to call the venture off."
"Did you sleep at all last night?" I asked.
"An hour or two."
But he had no dark circles under his eyes. No fair. I always thought it would be nice to be Fae, if only to be able to stay up nights and do things that other people were too exhausted to dream of doing. Sleep was such a human weakness and there wasn't anything I could do about it.
He asked, "And how did you sleep?"
I shrugged. "You should know that better than I. The bedroom door was open the entire time."
Cameron smiled sweetly, "Sure. You muttered in your sleep about how much you loved me."
I glared at him. "I don't talk in my sleep and if I did, I certainly wouldn't waste my breath on you."
"Oh come on, don't be such a poor sport." I didn't quit my frowning, so he said, "Do you want to go home now?"
"Sure. I just need to go get some shoes."
"Oh, I just had the cleaning lady toss out your entire outfit after I discovered some wolf slobber on the satin."
"Cameron! I swear you send away my clothes on purpose."
