The Dark Heart
It is a dark and stormy night in the town of Venice, Italy. The date is February 12, 1456. An innocent peasant girl by the name of Maria is walking home from the local market bringing home her weekly groceries. The few sacks that she has contain no more than a few yards of fabric for clothes, food for the upcoming week, and stationery to write letters. A weeks' pay cannot buy much, but there is just enough there to be able to get by and pay the rent.
As Maria is on her way to her small cottage at the end of the road, she hears a noise behind her. She turns, but sees nothing, so she continues on her way. Meanwhile, in the neighboring town of Mestre, there is a man by the name of Demitri. Demitri is nowhere near a peasant, and also, nowhere near innocent. Now, Demitri is not one to be trusted, for many reasons, but for one certain reason in particular. Demitri is not an ordinary human being. In fact, he is not a human being at all. Demitri, is a vampire.
Demitri and Maria have never met each other, and don't even know that one another exists. The two will soon cross paths, but neither knows it yet, and neither knows what is going to happen when they do. Now, as we are watching Maria walk back to her home, Demitri, on the other hand, is not going anywhere near his home because he does not have one. Demitri is what is called a Nomad. He travels from town to town, city to city, and country to country because of his secret.
Demitri, being a vampire, has to get food somehow. As most know, vampires' diets consist of blood. Demitri is not what is called a vegetarian vampire, but he also doesn't just hunt humans. He hunts both humans and animals, hence his lifestyle. When Demitri kills an animal, for the most part it goes unnoticed because he finds the animals in forests. The people, however, are a little bit more complicated.
When he kills a human, he has to figure out a way to get rid of the body so no one will find out what happened to that person. Demitri is what is called a newborn vampire, which means that he was just created recently, and is still in the first few months of his new life. Newborns don't know how to control what vampires call thirst, which is the desire to hunt, and Demitri has basically been on his own because his creator abandoned him shortly after Demitri was bitten. Because Demitri is a newborn, and is what is called a rogue, and because he was left without a creator to train him how to conceal the vampire secret, he does not know how to dispose of the bodies that he drains. This is an extreme problem.
When you are a newborn, you have uncontrollable thirst, which means that you are unable to think of anything else but getting the blood from the closest possible source. That is why your creator is supposed to stay with you and train you, by order of vampire law. Since Demitri was left without a creator, he has not had the proper training, and is always blinded by his thirst. Therefore, the only thing he knows how to do besides talk and defend himself, is hunt. He cannot think of anything else, and vampires do not sleep so he is always on the move.
Now, in the town of Mestre, there have been several reports of people just appearing to disappear out of thin air and not return. Unfortunately, Demitri is the exact cause of those disappearances. There have been many bodies found but the only injuries were two puncture wounds fairly close together, either on the wrist or neck. The only evidence that something became of those two puncture marks, is that when the autopsy report is filed, the doctors find that the blood has been completely drained of the victims. No one knows for sure what is causing it, except Demitri, and the very head of the vampire law enforcement.
When a vampire is rogue, by order of vampire officials, they are supposed to be destroyed. In some cases, however, the vampire officials wait to see if the vampire at question can and will change. If not, then by order, the vampire shall be destroyed. Demitri's case is one of those special cases. Right now, we are at the point where the vampire officials are waiting to see if Demitri will change his ways.
