The pavement was wet from the storm that had passed the night before. With headphones in, the small girl walked with her hands shoved in her pockets. It would be a very long walk to school, and she would probably be late, but she didn’t care. Brown eyes watched her combat booted feet walk along the ground squishing with every step. Her mouth in a frown at the thought of her dream. It was so vivid, that it replayed in her mind, over and over.
All of a sudden, something wet was thrown on her, and the screaming of guys out of a car that drove by her were all laughing. “Jerks” she muttered under her breath and flicked what she could off her, but it was no use, and no point in turning back. Heart squeezed from the incident that had just happened and all she could do was bite her lip, and mutter cuss words at the disappearing car.
Her fingers played with the broken necklace that her mom had given her in her pockets. Bringing it out, she rubbed her thumb over the shiny rock, letting her thoughts go into the rock. She started to notice something happening when she did that, and watched with furrowing brows as it started to glow. “Weird” she said, and just shoved it back in her pocket to start walking again, but when she did, she noticed a dog in front of her and stopped short.
It was a small beagle, and he was wiggling his tail, just looking at her, “Hey puppy” she said, and thought that it must be hungry. Brushing a lock of brown hair from her face, she dug into her backpack and brought out a peanut butter sandwich that her mom had made her for lunch. Knowing she wasn’t going to eat it, she then slung her backpack back over her shoulder and heard a cling on the ground. Looking down, she saw the necklace, and was about to pick it up, when the dog barked and ran to her, grabbing the necklace in it’s mouth and taking off.
“Hey!” she yelled after the dog and shoved the sandwich back in her bag, soon following after the dog as it ran into the woods. “So much for a good day, Anna” she said with frustration, and pushed past trees, slowly coming to a stop, and worry entering her face, “Come here puppy!! You’ve got something of mine!!” she yelled into the dark, empty woods.
Worrying, she looked back to the street, and sighed, going deeper into the woods, ‘I don’t think it would matter if I was to miss school or not’ she thought, as she hiked into the woods, only to yell once more. When a muffled ‘woof’ came her way, she looked around to find the dog deeper into the woods than her, on a log and wagging it’s tail at her, and turning on it’s heel to go deeper. ‘Fuck’ she thought, and stumbled a bit faster after the dog.
When she reached the dog again, this time a couple feet away, she watched him with open arms, and lunged for him. Not realizing the slope, she fell over, and slid down a huge hill, screaming. The dog, however, disappeared.
Hands clawed at the muddy earth to stop herself, but she couldn’t and only screamed further. Trying her best to grab things, she ended up cutting herself more. Looking ahead over her, she saw two trees connecting each other into a dark cave, “Holy shit!” she yelled, and turned tried clawing things in front of her, but only slid closer to the black cave. “No!” she screamed, and closed her eyes as she swished into the dark cave and slowly stopped.
Crickets were chirping, and with hands covering her face, she slowly opened her eyes, to the darkness of night, and fireflies. “What the hell?” she said aloud, and slowly unfolded her fetus position, to a stand, looking around the woods with confusion.
