Dream of Equality

Some days I like to think

That in the real world equality could be a real thing

That having breasts doesn't make you inferior

And possessing testosterone doesn't make you superior

I like to dream of a society where the color of your skin doesn't define who you are

It won't be a deciding factor of what gets you so far

I want to believe that when you come from a different place

People will understand that you're still the same race

That having brown skin doesn't make you dirt

And while kids will be kids words really do hurt

And that sticks and stones may break your bones

But words echo

For an eternity

Making you feel undeserving

Making you feel like everything you endure in life just isn't worth it

Not when everyone around you makes you feel worthless

Not when society is the cause of your insecurities

Insecurities as far as the eye can see

And further

Drowning in a sea

And forgetting how to breathe

Made much worse by thoughts in your head

Telling you that every word

Every whisper

Is about you

When in reality

You're invisible

Unseen

And you don't know which is worse

Being a nobody

Or being a freak

I need to believe that even though we've messed up

We can still bounce back

That this isn't it

Because it can't be

We have survived through all this time

And this shit has to be worth it

I need it to be worth it

Because if it isn't

Why the hell do I care?

If it isn't

Then all I'm doing is wasting air

And I'd rather be buried under the ground than drown beneath the weight of hostile waves and opposition

I'd like to believe that I can make a difference

For those I love

And those I hate

A life should never go to waste

And when I close my eyes each night

I dream of ways to make things right

Because some days I like to think

That in the real world equality could be a real thing
