             One bitter morning, Kat watched the frost engulf the river, trapping the fish underneath like a transparent blanket. Suddenly there was a loud "crunch!" sound that came from behind. A startled Kat slowly turned to catch a glimpse of a young boy, looking rather sheepishly at her.                                 

"Sorry to startle you like that. I was just collecting firewood for my father..."He glanced at her scar, but Kat was used to this but didn't expect the reaction he gave her. He just looked into Kat's eyes and asked what she was doing in the forest all alone in this weather, while taking a seat on the grass next to her. Kat decided to tell the boy why and he looked at her sympathetically and told Kat about himself. His name was Edmund and he was just a year older than Kat.

  Soon after the pair were speaking, Kat began to feel dizzy and light-headed, so she clutched Edmund's hand tightly, "I-I-I don't feel t-t-too good-d.." Kats grip on his hand loosened as she fell to the floor unconscious. Realising that she was very ill, the boy picked her up gently and carried her to the nearest village hospital as fast as he could...


    Hours later, Kat woke up and saw two blurry figures. She recognised the smaller figure, Edmund and blinked a few times to make out that the taller person next to him, was a doctor. Kat was relieved that Edmund was still there as Kat never had company before,. But both of them; Edmund and the doctor, looked at her with sorrow, tears rolling from the doctors eyes, onto his pale cheeks...
