Friday Morning

- Sarah -

Feeling an arm tighten around me, I wake to see John holding me to him while he sleeps. Looking at the clock I see it's 6:21. Gently loosening his hold on me, I crawl over to get off the couch. We must have fell asleep while watching a movie. Picking up his phone, I set an alarm so he won't be late for work. Writing him a quick note for him, I gather my stuff and go outside. I call Clare as I sit on his front doorsteps. "Hello," says Clare in a groggy voice. "Hey, Clare I am sorry if I woke you up," I say hoping she is not going to be mad. "I have been up for a little while. Why are you calling me ?" "I am sitting outside at John's, and I need you to come pick me up. I feel asleep on his couch; we were watching some movies." Waiting for an answer, I hear some noise coming from the phone. "Clare, did you hear me?" "Yes, I will be the in 30," she says sounding busy. "Thank you, bye." "Your welcome, bye," she says just before hanging up.

At 6:50 I see Clare pull into the driveway. I get in to see Clare giving me a death glare. When I don't say anything she turns the car around and pulls out of the driveway. Halfway home she asks, "Why did John not drive you home last night? " "He fell asleep also," I say knowing Clare does not like this situation. "So you fell asleep on the couch, where did he sleep? " she asked sounding irritated. Looking out the window I say, "He fell asleep on the couch with me. We were watching the Titanic. You know how long it lasts." After a long pause she says, "I know you are an adult, and I am not your parent but that does not look good for a young lady to spend the night with a man. Your granny would have been furious." Leaning my head on the window I say, "I know Clare, but everything is fine. John is still asleep and I set an alarm to wake him. And I am with you." "What would people thing if they heard that you spent the night at his house? Not everyone knows you like I do. They could think that you are.. " "Clare, you have nothing to worry about. And if they do talk, let them. I don't care because it wouldn't be the truth," I say getting mad. Out of the corner of my eye I see her look at me then look back to the road. "Sorry, I am just worried that's all," she says as she turns into our long driveway.

Slamming the door closed behind me I start to head towards the stairs. "Sarah, do you want any breakfast? " I stop just short of the stairs and turn around. "Yeah, the usual. I am going to change then I will be down in a moment. " Nodding her head, she heads off to the kitchen. Once I am in my room, I grab a change of clothes and go onto the bathroom. I get a quick shower and chance then I head back down stairs. When I walk into the kitchen the smell of coffee immediately fills my senses. I reach to to the cabinet and grab a coffee mug. As I am adding the sugar and creamer to my coffee, Clare sets my plate on the bar. "Thank you, Clare. It looks good," I say before eating my plate of eggs, rice, and bacon. Just as I am finishing up, I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket. Taking a glance at it I see it is John calling. "Morning, " I answered. "Why did you not wake me up before you left this morning? " he says. "You have work and you needed your sleep," I replied. "I don't care," he says sounding angry. "I do," I said and hung up on him. Clare looked over at me and asked, "Problems ?" "No, he must have just woken up. He gets grouchy after he wakes up," I tell her as I put my dishes in the sink.
