Back when I was in elementary school, I was one of the invisible kids. A boy named Luke was my only friend, and I his. We had been  inseparable since we were six years old. Him and I were ignored by other kids, but at that point we hadn't needed anyone else. Just each other.
Luke and I were polar opposites though, in appearance and personality, which could have been the reason we got along so well. But one thing that was a little off about him and different from most was his home life.
His parents were strict, old fashioned, and quick tempered. Luke was punished often for things most kids' parents would have overlooked. Things we got a mere slap on the wrist for, Luke was severely dealt with.
He wasn't allowed to have friends over, and I was never allowed inside his house. We just played in his front yard and when we wanted to stay the night we would go back to my house.
But one time, I went to surprise Luke at his house on his birthday, and I could hear screaming through his front door, despite how thick it was. I could distinctly hear his father and I heard Luke crying. I had pressed my ear to the door, but stumbled forward when it was opened, only to be thrown back again when Luke was thrown out on the porch.
He had landed on me, and he was beaten bloody, his hair matted with blood. It looked like someone had hit him upside the head with a baseball bat.
"You come back here, I will kill you, boy." His father had said it deadly calm, and he was barely audible with the protesting screams of Luke's mother behind him. Before he'd shut the door, he said in a sickening polite voice to me, "Goodnight, Alex."
We never talked to each other after that day.
We saw each other in the halls of our school, only giving each other curt, awkward nods. I never knew where he ended up. And I honestly couldn't bring myself to ask him. My parents asked about him occasionally, but I simply changed the subject.
That was 7 years ago. Now, 22, I had almost forgotten about my childhood friend.
Almost.
I never expected to see him again. I also never expected to be running from a bunch of pimps. Also never expected to fall in love. But when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
But without sugar... It's some pretty shitty lemonade, huh?
