"Good morning children, today is a special day." Said Miss Lucille.
I knew exactly were this was going, 'today is the day where we enlighten the lives of more children as we welcome them to our family.' I mimicked along with her, it was the same speech every time. I wish I could at least give her points for creativity but of that she had none.
"At 4pm today we will be greeting six infants. If those who normally volunteer in baby care please be at reception at 3:45pm and stay in the hall after I dismiss you."
That would be me -I felt an obligation towards these kids, if they had to be stuck here at least they could be comfortable - Lilly, Mark and Alex. Alex was a year younger than us, number 24, she had astonishing hair it was a beautiful blend between auburn and strawberry blonde. Her eyes were blue and quite similar to mine, but they were always adorned by a glassy texture. I knew that she hurt inside but she was sweet nevertheless and always put others first.
I overanalyse everyone and everything,
spend hours daydreaming over nothing. Maybe nothing was wrong with her but who knows it's hard being cooped up with a bunch of pre and post pubescent delinquents."Lexi... Lexi are you listening?" Lilly asked agitatedly pulling me away from my thoughts.
"What?... Sorry I was um... Thinking". I really lost my train of thought. Train of thought what a peculiar metaphor, who was the first person to say that. Did they actually think there was train..." and there you go again. Are you listening ?" Lilly repeated. Poking at my shoulder with her boney finger hitting me in the same spot over and OVER AND OVER.
"YES" I answered loudly. The hall went silent. Maybe a bit to loudly.
"Lennox , do you mind holding your conversation until you leave the hall?" Head mistress Lucille growled.
" Sorry it will not happen again ". I was surprised I managed to get any words out of my mouth."As I was saying today ..." Lilly and Mark chuckled silently. I want to kill them , that was so embarrassing.
I felt a hand creep up behind my shoulder. "Looks like little Miss Princess has a bad side after all." Zachary chuckled.
Zachary, or should I say Zach, number 4. He was all one could imagine. He had all the characteristics of a ... Criminal, psycho but he refers to it as badass.
" And what's that supposed to mean?" I asked sarcastically." Never seen Princess Lexi get told off before. " he replied with a smirk.
" Well you really don't know me" I quickly retaliated."Is that an invitation to get to know you" his eyes slowly dropped looking me head to toe "better ". He whispered in my ear. Jet black hair framed his chiseled face with lust filled chestnut eyes ,and permanently pouted rosy lips, staring at me.
I looked at him with a tempting smile and bit my lower lip, leaning in to his ear I said
" you're disgusting" before turning away.He may be number 4 but he definitely thinks he is number 1 in everything; looks, smarts and being the biggest bad boy. 17 years, 17 years of mistakes. Make that 16 he wasn't much harm before the age of one. Responsible for the fire in the kitchen, tried jumping over the wall- only to end up in stitches- and more importantly responsible for always winding up the head mistress.
" today is Joey's 10th birthday and we have ordered a cake that will be served at lunch." Lucille continued. God she rambled for ever.
" it's almost my 18th" Zach shouted.
" Yes Zachary, I am aware of that" Lucille responded " if you would let me continue"." what happens when I turn 18. I'll be an adult can I leave?" Zach asked with a stern face.
" Zachary, May this wait till after assembly" Lucille said nervously." No, it's basic human right to let me know" he said more aggressively.
Head mistress looked over to Mr Romney with a worried look in her eyes. What was going on? What didn't I know ? Mr Romney came up the the stairs quickly and escorted Zach out the hall. Not before he turned to me and said " see ya later sweet cheeks". This boy only knew how to stir trouble.
