They were what many would consider to be a successful American couple. They worked hard at good paying jobs, spent their money on stuff, and lived for the weekends. They eventually realised that their job titles, their belongings, and their cars were not what they wanted to be known by. And they wanted more than just two weeks of vacation a year!
What began as a cheerful joke about "retiring young" quickly grew into something serious. They realised that with hard work, fussy planning, and some sacrifice the opportunity to clock out for the last time was well within their reach.
In an attempt to enrich there lives, they broke free of the behaviour that popular American culture tells them is normal and acceptable. In the beginning of 2013, they resigned from their jobs, sold almost everything they owned, and jumped ship in exchange for a new life abroad. They bought two one-way tickets and ended up on the other side of the globe in Chiang Mai, Thailand and have been there ever since.
