I step out from my office building, off to my bliss stop.
*30 minutes later*
"Afternoon, can I get one medium coffee with extra vanilla cream? Plus one small Darjeeling tea with a snickerdoodle cookie please."
I smile to the cashier writing down my order, Coral. I always come to this cafe and they seem to know me by now.
"Ya got it, babydoll! Wait, a coffee? Is it him AGI-"
I panic and flail my hands low enough for Coral to see. She smirks and extends a hand.
"$7,21 Little love bird."
I roll my eyes at her whisper and reach for my coat packet, until I hear a sweet voice next to my ear as I fumble in my wallet.
"Here you go, keep the change."
Soft breath on my neck and a pat on the head.
"Breathe next time, you get too anxious."
I freeze, I hear the first loud footsteps drown out as they reach stairs in the back of the cafe. I finally look up at Carol, probably looking like a deer in headlights.
"Smoooooth... I'll get your lunch before you run out of here in embarrassment."
I growl under my breath and walk to the other counter, further in the back, heart racing with each step.
*5 minutes later*
I reach the last stair and look up, scaning the room for Robert. I spot him stareing off into space on the right by the windows. I quickly jog over, making sure not to spill the drinks. I slip into the fake leather seats parallel of Robert.
"One coffee for you my good sir."
As I set down the coffee he seems to finally notice me and whips his head towards me, extremely shocked. He returns to his normal happy demeanor and snaps his fingers.
"Well it took you long enough, I really need this, I'm drained."
He takes a sip of the coffee and I snicker as his scruffy brown stuble is painted with white vanilla foam. He pouts at me.
"What's so funny?"
I unconsciously pick up a napkin in the middle of my laughing streak, calm to a breathy grin and lean my torso over the table, cupping his cheek softly and proceed to wipe away the foam. I lean back over and my actions finally register in my thick skull. My eyes widen and I gasp.
"Oh gosh... I'm so sorry Robert!."
I see his face light up as I panic, fumbleing over my words. I look up at him, my face ablaze. He smiles a cheeky grin and turns to the window left of him, sighing heavily, causing fog to form on the window. He turns back to me and tilts his head to the right slightly.
"How long have we been meeting up here for?"
I stare at him questioningly for a moment but soon think back to when we met.
Nothing was going my way. Dumped, a lawsuit, an overdraft in the bank. I had felt myself trip and I tried to brace myself for the fall, instead, two slim arms held me, pulling me back to the owners chest. At that moment everything quickened, my heart, my thoughts, everything. I blinked slowly looking at the river of people flow between my savior and I, people mumbling and sending glares, it was like warm silence held by bitter urbanism. I shivered as a man's voice brushed my right ear.
"I'm sorry to hold you like this, the crowd comes in waves. It'll just be a bit longer, promise."
I nodded and stood still. I finally saw the crowd thin and I felt the arms slowly leave my torso. I quickly turned to see the man I had my dignity to thank. Tall, bright brown eyes with a stylish coat and scarf combo. He grined and raised his shoulders.
"You seem a bit out of it, care to go get a warm drink to clear your head, and don't worry, I'd be happy to pay, one less thing to think about."
I could feel my cheeks burn, whether it was from Robert or the bitter city cold I'd never know, but I knew I could not pass the offer. The rest of the day we sipped at our drinks in this very cafe. Before I thought to leave, it became night and the store was closing. My mind is hazy but I'll always remember exchanging numbers as he walked me to my apartment, in the frigid cold no less. Since then we had been meeting every Friday after my work.
*back to the present*
"I have somthing to show you. Have time to join me?"
I know its somthing he's excited about because I can tell that sparkle in his eyes. I giggle and tilt my head.
"I don't know. You know how EXTREMELY busy I am... but mAAYYYyy-"
I'm cut off by Robert quickly sliding out and pulling my hands, his expression like one of a child on their birthday. I blush at his warm hands, soft yet worn. I wave to Coral as Robert drags me out the door.
