Claires POV:

"Mom??" I yell walking in the front door after school.

Usually mom is home but she wasn't today for some reason. She may have went out to the grocery store. Its just me & mom and it's been like this for as long as I can remember. Dad left when I was 3, I'm 17 now. He said he couldn't take the heat anymore, mom took it pretty bad. She started drinking and sometimes brought home strangers when she was pretty drunk. They usually left before I woke up for school. School's pretty bad also, I'm not really an outcast but I am not really popular either. I tend to stay to myself although I have Violet, my lab partner who I guess you could call my friend. She doesn't have much to do with me out of school, but that's okay. It really was weird for mom not to reply, I guess you could say I get a little worried about her; since she is always drunk. I walked into her room to make sure she wasn't just asleep. What I walked into I was most definitely not prepared for..

"MOM oh my god wake up PLEASE" I say as I grab her cold dead body from in the bathtub..

She didn't respond.. "Mom please stay with me.." I ran and grabbed my phone and dialed 911.

"911 what's your emergency?" The lady said from the speaker of the phone

"It's my mom please you have to send someone she isn't breathing" I frantically said trying to get her body on the bathroom floor.. "There's so much blood please hurry" I say once again.

"Sweetie I need you to calm down, I have someone on the way but I need to know what is wrong with her." She replies as calm as she can

"She cut her wrist, I don't know why. There's no pulse, oh god you have to hurry she's all I have!" I say through my heavy sobs and gasps for oxygen.

I heard the sirens coming nearer to my home as I lay holding my maybe dead mother's body in my arms, praying that she is still alive somehow..

The paramedics burst through the door and immediately start to work on my mother. I still can't seem to wrap my head around what is going on. Muffled voices start to be clear but yet I still could not process what they were trying to say to me. They started to put her on a stretcher, saying they have a faint heartbeat, the ride there seemed too quick to remember. They jumped out and got her into the hospital room immediately. I was running behind them when I felt a nurse grab me from behind right before I made it to the double doors behind them.

"You can't go in there until she is out of surgery sweetie I'm sorry" She says to be trying to hold me back

"YOU CAN'T LET HER DIE PLEASE DON'T SHE IS ALL I HAVE" I yell to the people rolling her down the hallway.

I noticed a boy around the same age of me poke his head out the doorway of a hospital room, he looked at me with a sad look in his eyes. I couldn't breathe everything was falling apart I didn't know how to react so I started sobbing. Everything started to get dark, and I could feel myself falling to the floor. I didn't wake up until 4 hours later, and when I did.. I saw the boy in my hospital room.

"Where am I..?" I say through the pain of a major headache.

"You passed out.. hit your head pretty hard. I helped the nurse get you into a room and offered to stay here until you woke up.." He replied through a very long yawn.

"Th-Thanks.. How's my mom..?" I say with caution because I was not prepared for the words that may come out his mouth.

"She's uh.. She's gone.. I am so sorry.." He said very slowly.

Here came the tears again.. I don't even know this kid and all I need is a hug from him, from anyone..

"Can you please come hold me.. I know that's weird but I need someone right now.. She was all I had.." I say while the tears stream down my face.

He walks over and I scoot over to give him room. He wraps his arms around me and I couldn't hold it in.. I sat there for 20 minutes almost crying without any breaks. He finally dries the rest of the tears on my cheek and starts up a conversation.

"What's your name?" He says sweetly

"Claire, Clair Volcks. Yours?" I reply with a raspy voice.

"Peyton Layne" He says with the voice of an angel

"How come you're at the hospital..?" I say trying not to sound too nosy.

"My mom is in pretty bad shape I guess you could say. Stage 4 lung cancer for about 5 years now, she doesn't have much longer sadly." He says firmly, but yet sweet.

"Oh wow.. I'm sorry.." I say with a caring voice because it was truly sad.

"Don't worry about it, she won't hurt anymore. I'll miss her for sure" He says cheerfully

We talked about a lot before I finally stopped talking because I felt kinda sick thinking about the only person I have, to be gone so suddenly. The doctor walks in to make sure I am doing okay and asks if I have a place to stay since mom was all I had. Of course I don't but Peyton offers his house since it's just him now. After I check out he takes me back to my house and refused to let me go into moms room.

"It won't help at all Claire.. It'll only upset you, just go get your stuff you need and we'll come back tomorrow and get the rest.." He says while hugging me.

I felt as if I was safe with him, and I enjoyed this feeling. I ran upstairs and grabbed my suitcase and started packing my clothes and decided to change out of these clothes since they had blood all over them. Peyton had grabbed a few things from mom's room that I had asked for. Such as her mermaid tear necklace, she had bought for me but had yet to give it to me, and a few other things like our pictures. He waited for me in the car, and when I got done it was time to say goodbye to my house..
