Chapter 1
Waking up is and always will be a difficult ordeal, not just for me, but for everyone in the world.
They say that the ideal amount of sleep a man requires is ‘five minutes more’.
So one fine morning, when my alarm screeched ‘Wake up, Wake up, WAKE UP, WAAAAKKEEEE UPPP!!’ on the bedside table, I was obviously pretty annoyed. . I slapped the clock to silence it and rolled over to get back to sleep. One of the bad things about living on your own was that mom wouldn’t wake you up like ‘honey, good morning, get up’ or something.
But honestly, in my house, the idea of my mom waking me up so gently and lovingly was ridiculous. I mean, my mom had recorded the ringtone of the alarm I woke up to everyday. I don’t believe that the woman ever woke me up with breakfast in bed; well apart from the time she dumped a heap of previous night’s spaghetti Bolognese on me because I refused to wake up.
But that was four-five years ago, wasn’t it?
I’m frigging twenty-one now. I’m an adult! I can live the way I want. I can sleep all day if I want to, I can stay up all night if that’s what my heart desires.
Our love…will be forever!
And if we die…we’ll die together!
Ugh, that stupid cell. These phones, they always ring at the wrong times, don’t they?
Last week, it rang in church while I was at a confession. And that’s not the worst part; my ringtone back then was ‘Insane’ by Eminem. I can still remember the look on the priest’s face as Eminem threw a volley of swear words.
From then on, I’ve chosen safer ones, but this one’s no less irritating.
‘Hello?’ I yawned into the phone.
Cuz our love…will be forever…
Oh, I hadn’t accepted the call.
‘Hello’ I said again, after pressing the green button.
‘Gooooood mooorrnninggg sunshine!! How are you today? Got an interview, haven’t you? Wake up now, get up…get up!! You need to be ready darlin’, you never know what to expect!’ my mom’s voice blared into my ears.
That was one of the great things about her; even the deaf could hear her loud voice so clearly and so loudly in their ears.
‘Mom…mom…mom. Breathe in, breathe out…’ I replied, trying to calm her.
She paused for a minute, as if wondering whether the effort was worth it. And then, obviously thinking that it wasn’t, she continued: ‘Let me give you some sound advice dearie; firstly dress neatly, alright? And DO NOT, for any reason whatsoever, forget to BRUSH YOUR TEETH!’
Gosh, parents can get so embarrassing sometimes.
‘Hello?’ A deeper voice, belonging to my dad asked. I could hear my mom whispering loudly in the background.
‘Hey dad.’ I replied.
‘Good morning kid— no sorry, big lady! I can’t believe that you’re going to work and everything, my little Millie pants has grown up!’
‘Dad, dad, get a hold—’
Before I could complete my sentence, mom had taken the phone back from him.
