Some things last forever <3 :]
Chapter 2
The phone was always near me. In the spur of the moment, or due to lack of common sense and the ability to think straight, I’d went to the nearest mobile store and purchased a Blackberry right after my interview because I thought I needed a phone which looked more business-like than the ancient Motorola I had carried till then. I’d been planning to buy a phone for a while… if three years can be called “a while”, but however old and battered the Motorola was, it was perfectly fine for my needs . But this blackberry wasn’t what my idea of a new phone was. I mean that phone was so beautiful and new that I literally had to carry it around on a cushion or something to prevent it from breaking. Not literally but whatever.
Almost as soon as I exited the shop from where I bought it, I regretted the purchase most deeply. I mean, what if I didn’t get the job? What if I was stuck washing plates in someone’s kitchen or changing diapers of a three year old? Why would I need a friggin’ business phone then- as a chew toy for the kid?
My cheeks looked hollow like Helena Bonham Carter’s because I hadn’t really eaten anything in two or three days— I had lost count, so I wouldn’t know exactly how many. I had survived on nothing but orange juice. My nails were so jagged from biting that they resembled a banshee’s.
My brand-new phone rang now and then but it was always either my lunatic mom or some stupid advertisement. WHY COULDN’T THE DAMN LAW FIRM CALL?
A week was up, wasn’t it? A week is 168 hours right? And that got over more than three hours ago. I know because I had timed it in the stopwatch of my worthless blackberry. True it had amazing picture quality, a gorgeous touch screen, looked oh-so-sexy and so like the thing a successful business woman would carry, but what was the point of buying this phone if I didn’t get that job?
‘You have two messages’ my phone said when I checked in the afternoon.
The first was from mom, asking me to call her; telling me that I would get in and that there was no doubt about it. Then there was something about a can of soup and someone’s door but I couldn’t make out what she said over the voice of some dogs barking on my mother’s end of the line.
The second one was from GnH, so I got all excited but it was only a strict woman’s voice informing me that the results would be out by evening.
By eight in the night, when I had gone out to finally collect my day’s mail, I accidentally kicked a tin at my doorstep and soup spilled all over the place. And then I finally understood what my mom was saying about soup and who’s door she was referring to. Cursing under my breath, I grabbed a towel and started mopping the area.
The phone rang again. I mumbled under my breath about how irritating it was that phones ring at the most unfortunate times and went back inside to pick up the call.
‘Hello?’ I snapped. It was an unknown number.
‘Good evening, am I talking to Millie Elizabeth Myrtle?’ a calm, almost bored female voice asked. She sounded mechanic, as if this was a daily routine for her. For a moment it felt like I was conversing with a robot. But this wasn’t 2050 for a random robot to call me up to chat.
‘Err…yeah, Millie Myrtle…that’s me.’ I said.
‘Well good, firstly congratulations.’
When she didn’t explain further I asked, ‘Err…why…is this about that crossword I submitted?’
‘Uhh…no actually, I am calling from Gerrard and Harold’s—’
My heart jumped up to my mouth as she mentioned the name. I quickly interrupted and asked ‘Am I, am I in?’
