I got home that afternoon to find that Nate wasn't there. He probably decided to go somewhere with his mates or something.
I decided to just sit and watch a film while eating chocolate ice cream with brownie pieces. Yum!
I heard a knock on the door just before the end of the film and I opened it to see Nate. His little friends were in a car and were pulling out of my driveway.
"I thought you didn't want them knowing that you were here?" I asked as he stepped inside.
"They don't. I told them that I have to pick up something for my Mum." He replied. I nodded and walked back up to my room. He followed and sat on my bed. "How come you left the canteen today?" He asked.
"Because people were whispering and I didn't belong there, I don't even know why you took me in there." I said as I picked up my newest book and opened it.
"I wanted you to feel normal so you wouldn't have such a hard life." He said.
"But that just made life harder." I replied. "Hearing everyone, sitting somewhere I don't belong, Tiffany eyeballing me from across the table, it didn't feel right, it wasn't me." I added.
"I wanted you to not have whispers and be protected." He said.
"Why? Why is it so important to you all of a sudden. If you think I want popularity as rent money or something then your wrong. The only thing I want is for things to stay normal!" I explained.
"I want you to be happy!" He said.
"Why! All you've ever done since the start of secondary school is pick on me and now you want me to be happy? Well I am happy, i'm happy being alone, i've built my life around it and I altered everything. I'm perfectly fine as I am! Why does it suddenly matter whether I'm happy or not!" I asked.
"Because it just does okay!" He shouted.
"Ugh, why won't you just tell me!" I asked.
"All in good time" He replied. I groaned and just started to read. He tried to talk to me afterwards and I just ignored him. I was lost in my own little book world and didn't even realize that he had turned the tv on and that 2 hours had passed when I heard the front door slam. Mum came up the stairs and when she saw that Nate was in my room she eyeballed him for a minute before coming into my mini library and asking me if he is okay to be in my room. I just shrugged and continued to read.
"You remember what he did to you, what he's like." She told me. I nodded and she sighed. "Just be careful. Sometimes your heart can be too big. Keeping him here while he needs a place to stay is okay but don't socialise with him too much." She told me.
"I won't Mum." I said as she walked out of the room.
Nate walked in after she left. "She doesn't like me very much huh." He said.
I shook my head. "Why would she, you have tortured me for ages and she's my Mum." I replied.
He nodded. "If you want me to leave, i'll leave. Don't feel like you have to let me stay-" For some reason, I cut him off.
"Its fine, don't worry about it. Just no more lunch hall stunts like today. I do not need or wish to socialize with your group of friends." I replied.
"And theres me thinking everyone wants to be a popular." He chuckled. It made me laugh a bit and his smile got wider as I did. "What are you reading anyway?" He asked.
