CHAPTER 1: FLIGHT

It’s been 5 years since I’ve been in this hellhole. Trapped in this isolated room with chains on my wrists that are getting heavier and heavier everyday. I’ve grown tired and haven’t seen the outside world for so long. I’ve tried breaking the locks on the cuffs attached to my wrists but so far nothing has worked. I need to get out of here. I need the keys. The keys. My freedom. I grinned at the thought of this. I waited all day for the guard to open the steel door and have grown so damn bored. Shit. I felt my eyes starting to close. I haven’t slept for 3 days, my memories…are creeping back into my mind. It’s not the time to remember such vile thoughts. I let out a sigh as my eyes began to close. So tired. Right before I drift to sleep, I heard the sound of heavy metal doors open. A man in uniform stepped inside and that’s when I noticed that it’s one of the guards. This is my chance! I waited silently for him to come close enough so that I could get the keys, and then freedom at last. The thought made me smile. The guard closed the door and started making his way towards me. Watching his every movement I decided he was close enough. With all my strength I got up and tackled him down the cement floor. He started to struggle and scream for call for help.

“That won’t save you,” I said with and evil grin. I covered his face and smothered him. The bastard took forever to give out, and it felt like hours instead of minutes until the body went still. Grabbing the keys from his pocket, I unlocked all the rusted brown cuffs that hung on my wrists. Both of my wrists looks bruised and scratched up. I stood up, nearly fell over as I grabbed the keys to open the steel door.

I was prepared to kill anyone in my path as I began to unlock the doors slowly. Peering out the door, I noticed that there was no one was in sight. What lousy security. Oh well, at least it saves me time. I made my way out. The light got brighter and nearly was blinded. Damnit, my eyes haven’t adjusted to the light (my cell didn’t really have light so I adjusted more to the darkness). Right when I got to the end of the hallway, I saw more guards. Shit. I built up the strength to run towards them. All 3 turned around. One pulled out his gun but before he could shoot I snapped his neck. I used the rest of my speed and strength to kill the last 2 before they could call for back up. I felt my heart pound. The adrenaline. I haven’t felt the rush since forever! It felt so damn good. I smiled ear to ear. I grabbed a pocketknife one of the guards had. I prefer a knife because its light and silent, quick for murder. I ran, scanning corridors for anyone. The feeling of the knife in my hand, killing someone before they noticed and the blood spilling from there worthless carcass. Memories started flooding back but I pushed them aside. I ran through the hallways and passed doors managing to get passed the main gate. Almost there! There’s one problem though. The guard towers. I’d probably get shot dead if I step out of the protection of the shadows. There was another way but I would have to go back and go through another door where I first stepped out. In thought, I was interrupted when the emergency alarm go off. They must’ve found the bodies already seeing the guards rush down from the guard towers and searching the whole area. This is my chance to make a run for it. I ran towards the fence and started climbing. Behind me I heard guards yelling and alerted the others.

“Shit!” with no hesitation I climbed faster. Reaching the top, which was covered with barbwire, I paused and looked at the nicely sharpened razors that could leave me skinless and bleed to death. The guards pointed their rifles aiming for one-hit kill shot. Having no other choice but to get moving through the wires. The razors instantly sank into my skin. I flinched in pain but kept moving. Right when I got through, a bullet was shot. Inches from my face. I jumped down and immediately ran for dear life. The shock from the jump temporarily numbed the feeling in my legs but no matter what I kept running. Hearing several shots being fired from behind, and seeing the bullets penetrate the ground right next to me gave me more reasons why I should keep running.

At some point I heard police cars behind me scanning the whole area. Hiding under cars, climbing trees and in bushes, my heart was beating rapidly in fear of getting caught. It started getting dark and in need of shelter. Waiting for the police activity to die down, I made my way down the unfamiliar streets, trying to ignore the intense pain in my legs and burning sensation in my lungs. I slowly cross the street. But from the corner of my eye I saw a white light. “What the he-”

I felt a massive force ram me down the concrete floor. My eyes vision blurry and slowly starting to close. All I could remember seeing was a girl yelling (couldn’t make out what she was saying) and tears in her eyes. Pain surged all over my body. Unable to move and my body becoming numb. The fear of death came over me. What just happened? …………..Am I….dead?
