Cooler Than Me

If I could write you a song

to make you fall in love

I would already have you up

under my arm

Walking around the pool waiting to jump in. Avoiding the dog, the river caught my eye. You never know what you have till it's gone. I look back toward the pool. Three boys and two siblings stare at me waiting. I catch the oldest ones eye, he's only a year older than me. There was a little spark of challenge gleaming in his eye. That gave me my cue, I broke eye contact and charged toward the pool.

I used up all of my tricks

I hope that you like this but

you probably won't

you think your cooler than me

I attempted to do my best front flip in the pool, when I rose, the oldest wasn't paying attention. I tried to get his attention again, nothing. I'm waiting behind the oldest brothers, and my sisters to jump in. My sister starts running to jump, she forgot about something. The dog. Splash. It was a blur, girl and dog, headed toward the water. It could have been a lot worse. The after math was a bleeding knee and a sore paw.

You got designer shades just

to hide your face and

you wear 'em around like

you're cooler than me

After that everyone got clean up and dried off for lunch. The oldest and middle children went to the movie room. Out of curiosity and boredom, I said something like we were going to have a competition. "Stand in front of the girl you think is prettier." I was stupid to do that, my little kid brain, thought that was a great idea. After hearing "You aren't going to be offended right?" I should of known what the results were going to be. They went straight toward my sister with out hesitation. I think I managed to keep the tears in quite well, until they left. When we waved goodbye and they left, I headed to my room and felt like an idiot. Of course they wouldn't choose me. Why would they. It was a long time after that I saw them again.

And you never say hey or

remember my name and

it's probably because

you think your cooler than me

Biking around the neighborhood we passed their house. They were playing soccer out in their yard. My mom waved at their mom well I petaled on.  So awkward. They are so busy with sports and we never see them. I'm sure my mom misses being around their mom. They are really close. So many times I ride my bike wishing to see them again. They are never out.

You got your high brow,

Shoes on your feet and

you wear 'em around like

it ain't it

It was at the youngest brothers birthday when I saw them again. Cowboy was the theme. I remember the red bandana around my neck. I still have the wooden horse name tag I painted. I don't have any memories talking to them. I remember looking for the oldest but I think he was with his friends.

But you don't know

the way that you look, when

your steps make that much noise (sh)

Halloween was the next time I saw them. They throw awesome parties, and I was eager to go. I was all ready in my Cleopatra costume. I thought that costume was the best thing ever. White silky feel with the end dyed blue. I was so happy when wearing it. I remember having a blast. At the end of the night I remember laughing at the boys when they were dancing to a song.  I didn't see them for years. I missed so many chances to see them because my dad wouldn't let me go.

See, I've got you

all figured out

You meet everyone's eyes just

to feel seen

I doubt they remember me. I saw them last year at a party, they grew up fast. The oldest looked like a replica of his father. What happened to glasses and braces? The girls are probably chasing after him.

Behind your makeup,

nobody knows who

you ever are

who do you think that you are?

I ran into their mom at work, she had to do a double take because it had been so long. Then I realized that her youngest son was in the group I was helping. It's been so long, I tried not to creep him out with my constant glances. I couldn't wrap my mind around that the little boy I knew from when I was young, was sitting right in front of me, almost done with elementary school. It's probably the last time I'll ever have contact with that family again. When I said that I wasn't coming back to work next year, I could feel the book coming to a close. When one book closes, a new story begins, I wonder what that will be.
