I force myself to pry my eyes off the red glow. Under my breath I mumble, "I must stay put, I cannot give myself away." But every instinct in my body tells me to flee or fight; they tell me I am a sitting duck here in this tree.
Angrily I slash my claws into the strong bark of the oak; two flashes of silver later, the bark shredded like paper. I take a deep breath and as I let it out, I allow myself to sink back into my perch. I. Will. Go. To. Sleep. I will ignore the red smoke; calling like a beacon to the humans.
After a few minutes of tossing and turning, I float off into the realm of dreams. A slight breeze grazes my right cheek and a slight curve of my mouth is the last movement I make. For not even a moment later, a sleek shadow flies through the air and scars me so that I am not able to love ever again. An arrow has pierced my heart.
