Later that day, Raven was preparing some apple cinnamon tea for herself when her phone rang.
"Raven?" Bree's voice squeaked when Raven answered.
"Aren't you not supposed to be talking to me?" Raven questioned. "I thought you got a lawyer."
"I wanted to tell you that you were right."
"Excuse me?"
"I was jealous of Sadie. I hated her for stealing Vice President from me without even telling me she was running. I hated how she neglected the position once she won it. I hated how she got Graham Ambassadors, something I desperately wanted. And yes, I started the rumor about her and Andrew. She never cheated on Malcolm. Andrew was just some guy who walked his dog with her. Sure, he liked her, but who wouldn't? She was smart, beautiful. And eventually I got over my jealousy and realized how much I missed our friendship."
"Well, I appreciate you finally admitting this to me," Raven managed.
"I also wanted to let you know that I didn't kill her. I have no idea who killed her, and I really hope you find that person. My sorority sisters will confirm that I was at the Phi house during the time of her murder if my lawyer hasn't already. And Katie will tell you the same thing. We were both eating dinner at the time. Neither of us were home."
"Thank you," Raven said.
Bree wasn't finished. "There's more," she said. "Two nights before Sadie was killed, Sadie found Malcolm in Katie's room. They had an argument and they broke up—that's why there weren't any pictures of him in her room. The break up was so soon before she was killed, though, that I didn't really tell anyone about it. And I didn't hear what they were saying, I just knew they were arguing and that it was bad. But I'm telling you, Raven, Katie was innocent."
"Have you noticed anything different about Katie lately?" Raven wondered. "Like...drug use?"
Bree paused. "I had a feeling..." she began. "But you have to promise me, you won't punish her."
"Do you think maybe Malcolm supplied the drugs?"
"I—yeah I do actually."
"Cocaine."
"Yes," Bree agreed.
Another pause.
"So why now?" Raven asked. "Why come forward now?"
"Because it's the right thing to do," Bree responded. "And despite my jealousy or selfishness, Sadie was one of my best friends, my sister, and sister bonds are forever."
Raven erased Bree from the suspect list.
