Sitting back on the plush loveseat in Vic's living room next to the boy himself I glanced over at him.
"What are we watching?" I asked, offering him the bowl of popcorn sitting in my lap.
"I'm not sure", he replied taking a handful of buttery popcorn.
"Mike", Vic called to his brother who was crouched in front of the TV, fiddling with it, "What are we watching?"
"Batman", Mike called back.
"Yay", I smiled, "Batman is definitely my favourite masked vigilante."
Jaime's laugh filled the living room as he vaulted over the back of the couch, plonking down next to Tony.
"Think that was funny did you Jaime?" Tony asked, smiling at Jaime who was still in a fit of giggles.
"You're a funny one Rachel", Jaime said finally.
Suddenly the lights flickered off and the room was plunged into darkness. Nestling back into the plush couch I watched the opening credits begin to roll through. Watching Batman fight off villains I wondered what it took to be a masked vigilante. Feeling a warm hand rest over mine I looked over to where Vic was sitting next to me.
"You were tapping", he said quietly.
"Oh", I murmured.
I had been tapping since I could remember, it was a habit that came out of boredom. It was a habit that Vic hated.
"Bored?" He asked.
"Kinda", I shrugged.
"Want a drink?" He asked standing up.
Passing the bowl of popcorn to Jaime I stood up, "Yeah, I'll come."
Following Vic into the kitchen he flicked on the lights and walked to the fridge, opening it up and rummaging around inside.
"What do you want?" He asked from the fridge.
"I'll just have water", I said puling a glass from the cupboard and filling it up with water.
Leaning against the bench I sipped my water and watched Vic searching the fridge. Pulling his head out he cracked open the can of Coke and looked at me.
"What's wrong?" I asked, tilting my head.
"Nothing, nothing", he said moving to lean against the bench across from me.
"Victor Vincent Fuentes, what's wrong?" I demanded, jumping up to sit on the bench.
"Nothing", he laughed before dropping his head, "It's just that you look really nice today."
Tilting my head I was taken aback for a moment. Did Vic just compliment me? I mean sure we were friends but did he just outwardly compliment me? Looking down at my clothes I wondered what Vic saw exactly. I was wearing pretty much what I wore every day. A pair of denim shorts and a band tee cut into a tank-top.
"Ah, thanks", I said with a smile when Vic looked back up at me.
"Vic! Can you get me a Coke?" Mike yelled from the living room.
Vic rolled his eyes and grabbed another can from the fridge. Finishing my water I placed the glass in the sink and followed Vic back into the living room. Sitting back down in my spot on the loveseat, Vic tossed a can to Mike and sat back down next to me. Resting my head on the arm rest I could feel my eyelids drooping. I'll just rest my eyes for a minute I told myself and let my eyes drift closed.
---
Pulling my arm over my face to shield my eyes I sighed. Why in God's name did I leave my blinds open? And what was on me? My neck was aching and I suddenly I remembered where I was. Opening my eyes I glanced around the Fuentes' living room. I must've fallen asleep here, and by the look of the long dark haired body splayed on the other couch so had Tony. Remembering the weight pressing on my side, I looked over to see Vic leaning against me, asleep. His dark head was resting against my shoulder and his face looked peaceful in sleep. Rolling my neck I winced, it had a crick.
"Get off fatty", I murmured shoving Vic off of me.
"Huh? What?" Vic stuttered, rubbing his eyes and sitting up, "I'm not fat."
I laughed quietly, "When you're sleeping on me you are."
Standing up I stretched out my neck and sore limbs.
"Oh Rachel, Vic you're up", Mrs Fuentes chirped as she walked into the living room.
Tony's complaints were muffled as he rolled onto his stomach and buried his face into the couch. Watching Mrs Fuentes pull open the curtains, earning another groan from a sleeping Tony. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes I smiled at Vic.
"Good morning", Vic said to me quietly.
"Morning", I replied, "Where are Mike and Jaime?"
"Probably upstairs playing video games", Vic answered, "You want breakfast?"
I nodded, "Yeah. What've you got?"
Following Vic into the kitchen, he opened the pantry and began to look around inside, "Uh Corn Flakes, Coco Pops, Bran and Toast."
Pursing my lips I considered my options, "Ah, Corn Flakes."
Vic pulled the box of Corn Flakes from the pantry and tossed it to me. Setting the box on the bench I pulled two bowls from the cupboard as Vic grabbed the carton of milk from the fridge. Filling my bowl with cereal and milk I pulled two spoons from the draw I handed one to Vic and began to eat my cereal. Leaning against the bench, watching Vic finish pouring his cereal, and began eating too.
"Have you thought any more about college?" He asked between mouthfuls of cereal.
I shook my head, college was the one thing I'd been trying to avoid thinking about.
"Ugh", I groaned, "No. Have you?"
He shook his head, "Nope."
"At least you know what you want to do with your life", I sighed.
Vic had plans for the band. He knew where he wanted to be in ten years time, performing for hundreds of people every night. He just had to find a way to tell his parents.
Vic shrugged, "I have a dream Rachel, not a goal. A dream. There's a difference."
I nodded, finishing my cereal and putting the bowl in the sink, "You'll make it Vic. One day. I know it."
"And you'll be right there with me", He said, nudging my ribs.
I scoffed at the idea and Vic frowned at me.
"You have no faith in yourself Rach", Vic shook his head sadly.
"And?" I joked, trying to lighten the mood, a typical Rachel move.
Vic shook his head again, though this time he was smiling.
He opened his mouth to say something but Mrs Fuentes' voice cut him off, "Rachel! Rachel your Mum's here!"
Filing out of the kitchen after Vic, I followed him into the living room where both of our mothers were standing talking. Tony was still sprawled on the couch asleep and Vic and I glanced at each other. The mischievous smile on my face was mirrored on his. Tiptoeing over to the couch, Vic stood by the sleeping Tony and grabbed two pillows from the floor. Picking up a pillow I grinned. Holding up three fingers I lowered them one by one, silently counting down. Three...two...one...on cue Vic and I both started pelting pillows at Tony. He groaned and rolled over, covering his face with pillows.
"Guys", Tony whined, once the pillow onslaught had stopped.
Laughing at him I waved to Vic and Tony as I walked from Vic's house.
"See you Monday Rach", Vic called after me.
"Bye Victor darling", I called back with a smile.
