Chapter 4:

Rapunzel:

I sat where Jack had sat only yesterday. Could it really have only been that long? It felt like centuries... And I was one of few who knew what that feels like. I sighed and looked out of the window. Snow. So much snow. It was beautiful here, with sloping mountains of pure ice, sparkling in the sunlight. I could stay here forever... But not without Jack. I sighed and whispered, as if he could hear me.

"Jack, I lo-" North burst ungracefully into the room. To be honest it was amazing he could get through any of the doorways here in that coat. On the same track as me he removed it, then sat next to me on the window ledge.

"I think it would be best to talk about it." He offered kindly and I sighed.

"Why would Pitch do this?"

"Pitch is a very complex man. He has had a very difficult past, worse than us all combined." I looked up at him.

"How do you...?" North smiled.

"Do you want to understand?" I nodded. Santa repositioned himself on the ledge. I could tell this would be a detailed story...

"Pitch was once a human like you and me. He was never a horrible man, but he wasn't perfect. He had a very lonely childhood. You see, his mother died giving birth to him, and he always blamed himself for that. His father worked hard to look after his only son, but after sixteen years he couldn't handle it anymore. Instead of food or firewood he would spend it all in a bar. He didn't realise he was starving them both. One day Pitch realised he couldn't do anything, that by staying he wouldn't be helping his father, so he left.

"He moved to a village a long way away, got a good job, met a nice girl, everything looked good. After a few years he asked that girl to marry him, and she did. He was so happy... But he had no idea. At first when his wife became pregnant he was overjoyed, but she fell ill. Very ill. She was running out of time, but Pitch could do nothing other than wait, holding her hand by her bedside, telling her over and over again how much he loved her. She and her baby died a month before she was due for birth."

"I; I didn't know..."

"That's okay. It's not your fault, it's not anyone's really. But Pitch wouldn't move from that spot by the bedside. He died of starvation after all. The Man in Moon thought his unbelievable strength of love would be useful, but Pitch was brought back angry. The whole of the Dark Ages he terrified the world, wielding sadness and fear of everything, everything that lead to death. He didn't have his memories, I don't know if he has even seen them yet... But to this day he longs for a family."

Oh my... Pitch...

"But he still has Jack." I whispered.

"I know. And I know that his past doesn't justify this. But when the time comes, remember this. You are an incredible warrior Rapunzel. Your light can pierce any darkness. So heed my words, have love, even for your enemies."
