"Charlie?"
"Erm yeah, hey Q." It had been so long since Quinn had been called that and even longer since she had heard from Charlie. "Now like I was saying. Don't leave the house. I'll be there by the end of the day."
Just like that he hung up. It was like old times. He was just as abrupt and straight forwards as Quinn could remember. It had been five years since she had seen Charlie but once he had reached 18 years old he left home as soon as he could and Quinn hadn't seen or heard from him since. She wasn't even sure he was still in the country.
Quinn almost lost her appetite from this sudden news but she managed to swallow the last half of her second pancake. Thoughts were speeding through her head, she was sure that they were going over the speed limit. What would she do once Charlie got here? Would he take her away? Where does he live? So many questions yet none of them could be answered.
It was still early in the day and Quinn was told not to leave the house by her brother but her mother wanted her out of the house in the morning, what would she do? And wasn't her mother expecting her to move in with her grandparents too, how was she going to explain that Charlie was coming for her to her mother?
Sighing Quinn decided that she was going to go for a walk. Charlie meant not to leave the house with her bags right? That meant that she could just as easily go for a walk in the neighbourhood. Perhaps she would go and visit Benji and tell him the bad news. He only lived an hours walk away from Quinn after all. If she walked there and back it would waste some time until Charlie came by.
She moved her bags so that they were in the small cloakroom in the hallway, away from her mother's eyes just incase she were to throw them out of the house while Quinn was gone. Quinn took her phone and her purse and walked out the front door, taking care not to make any noise as she did so. This was probably going to set her mum off even more but what else could she do? She was already sending Quinn away.
The only thing that was heard that morning were the birds chirping in the trees and a pair of trainers pounding on the concrete. It was surprising to Quinn, that at 9 o'clock in the morning, there were no cars driving by. It didn't matter either way to her as she made her way to Benji's house. Taking her usual shortcut through the fields on the outskirts of her estate. England was a pretty country as long as you stayed out of the busy main areas.
She walked through the fields which soon turned to forest and then back again to estates. Quinn was getting closer and closer to his house and the second that she turned the next corner Quinn spotted it. The medium sized estate house, his black VW was sitting in the driveway next to his parents white mini.
Quinn's feet carried her the rest off the way to his house and her hand lifted automatically to knock on the door. Benji's mum, Christina, answered the door.
"Why hello Quinn, what a pleasant surprise. I take it you're here to see Benjamin?" Quinn's nod confirmed her assumptions. "Well come on in then. He's still upstairs in his room sleeping. Will he ever start waking up earlier?"
She walked back down the hallway and into the living room, grumbling about how boys will be boys. Quinn closed the door behind her and took the stairs to the first floor, then took a left turn. A few more steps and Quinn would be standing in front of his door.
Her hand lifted to the handle and she gently turned it and pushed the door open. It was dark in his room as she peeked her head through the gap in the door. Pushing it open a little more, Quinn saw in the darkness that the mass in the bed was a little large to be Benji. Her hand found the light switch on the wall and she let light flood the room.
Quinn stood there in the doorway, watching, as the bundle of in the bed started to move in a panic like way. After a moment or two a head poked itself out of the top of the sheets, and then another one followed. A pit started to grow in Quinn's stomach. There was only supposed to be one head, she recognised Benji from the reddening of his face. The other face was unfamiliar to her: the girl had long curling blond hair and a flawless look to her face.
Quinn took one look at the pair of them and flipped them the bird then walked out. Praying to God to help keep her strong until she left the house at least. She wasn't going to give the bastard any sign to show her weakness.
There was the sound of movement from his bedroom as Quinn was walking down the staircase, she quickened her pace. Quinn was out of the house in seconds, slamming the door after her, she started to walk back to her house.
Only when she reached the end of the street and turned the corner did she let the tears spill over.
Why was life so cruel?
