The next morning you woke up, relieved to see your sleeping girlfriend next to you. You smiled and gently traced her jawline with your fingers. She was so beautiful.

You expected her to flutter her eyes open like she usually does but she didn't even move. Panic started to set in when you realized how cold she was; and how she hadn't even moved from the position she fell asleep in. Then you realized...

She wasn't sleeping.

You basically jumped up off the bed and desperately tried to shake her awake.

"Lauren! Lauren, wake up!" your heart rate must've been through the roof at this point. You leaned down to listen for a heartbeat-- to find a pulse. Her heart was beating, pulse was there. You furrowed your eyebrows, breathing as heavy as ever, wondering what was going on. Was this a dream? Is she just playing some cruel joke?

"Lauren, I swear to God if you're just messing with me right now..." you warned. Just then, she just barely blinked her eyes open.

"Dammit, Lauren! I knew you were messing with me! What the fuck is wrong with you?!" you threw your hands up in the air and got no response. You looked at her in disbelief.

"Are you even hearing me right now?! Joke's over, cut it out," you said even angrier because she wasn't even making a move. She just laid there the way she was--still...completely still. She blinked and then stared at you. Not moving a muscle.

"Lauren?" you let your guard down a bit. "What's going on? Why aren't you moving?" you cautiously inched towards her. Part of you still believed that his was a joke.

Now you knew she wasn't kidding around when you looked closer. Her green eyes that, normally had a glow, looked blank and very out of it. This time you went straight to call 911. Something was seriously wrong.

About ten minutes later, the paramedics arrived and tried getting Lauren to get up. Still, she didn't make a move. It was as if she couldn't do anything but move her eyes. You stood back and watched the paramedics examining your girlfriend. Two of the tall men were trying to get her to move while the other one was checking her blood pressure and heart rate.

"Her heart rate is speeding up rapidly. We have to get this woman to the ER," the man checking her heart said with urgency.

When her heart sped up, it seemed like yours stopped. Your entire world froze when you heard that. Was this the last time you'd see her breathing? Oh my gosh...what if it was?

The tears started spilling as soon as all the possible outcomes rushed to your mind.

"Give Ms--" the man paused to check Lauren's I.D. "Jauregui's friend here a ride down the the hospital. We'll meet you there."

"Is she gonna be okay?" you asked in between sobs.

"We aren't sure at this point. Don't worry, we'll get her to a hospital and they'll find out," one of the taller men said. You nearly fell to the floor crying.

You couldn't lose Lauren. Not before you could ensure she'd be yours forever.

Hours later, you found yourself sitting in a waiting room chair drifting in and out of sleep. Still no news on how your girlfriend was doing was driving you insane. Before your mind could jump to any conclusions, a young man you assumed to be the doctor approached you.

"Y/N Y/L/N?" he asked. You nodded.

"We have some information about Lauren that we think you should know," he started cautiously. You nodded for him to continue. "It seems that she has suffered a stroke," your heart sank. "Have you noticed any strange behavior from her in the past 24 hours?"

You bit your lip in thought. Then you remembered the events of last night...she wasn't drunk, was she?

"Well last night," you started nervously, "she came home and was stumbling and slurring her words. I just assumed she had been drinking but I guess I just didn't think it would be anything else..." you trailed off.

The doctor gave you a sympathetic smile and nodded understandingly.

"Don't worry, she'll be fine," he assured you. "She's functioning somewhat properly now and we're just gonna keep her overnight tonight to be sure."

"When will I be able to see her?"

"Head on in now if you'd like," he motioned towards the door behind him.

You thanked him and then dashed through the doors and into Lauren's hospital room. Upon entering the room, you spotted your girlfriend sleeping peacefully, contrary to the way she was last night.

When you shut the door her eyes fluttered open, which caused a small smile to spread across your face. She turned her head weakly and smiled back.

"Hey," she said in a raspy voice.

"Hey," you walked over to sit on the edge of her bed, "how're you feeling?" you said as you stroked her cheek. She closed her eyes in bliss and took a deep breath.

"I love you," she ignored your question. "And I'll never get over the look on your face this morning. Just know that I would never hurt you like that on purpose," your smile faded.

"What do you mean?" you tilted your head in confusion.

"Just because I wasn't there doesn't mean I wasn't there," she explained. "My brain was working, my body just wasn't listening."

You stood there, processing what Lauren had just said. You felt immediately guilty for accusing her of playing a prank on you. But none of that mattered now. She was alive and you were together, which made it the perfect time.

Nervously, you reached into your pocket and pulled out a ring, just her size. Lauren followed the ring with her eyes in shock as you hopped off the bed and took both her hands in yours; gazing into her eyes, that were filling with tears.

"Lauren Michelle Jauregui," you started and she let the tears fall. "Will you do me the honour of being my wife?"

She couldn't even get one word out through her sobs so she just nodded and sat up to give you the most passionate kiss the two of you have ever shared. It was true; miracles did happen within hospital walls.
