I was walking to my usual hang out spot. It was a high up ledge near a cross road. So many memories came to me when I was there and it would always help me calm down. I usually was alone, but not today.
A woman - she seemed to be my age - was standing at the edge. Head lights briefly lit up her face that was noticeably wet. I carefully took step by step towards her and grabbed her hand.
"G-go away," she helplessly muttered. I saw her intentions. She had come here to die. I could see her skull cracking on the sidewalk below, causing me to clutch her hand tighter.
"No, lady, if you're going down, so am I. Got it?" She looked up at me and bit her lower lip. You could see the fear in her eyes.
"You d-don't even know who I am, b-but you'd die for me?"
"I want to know you, though." I gave her a patient smile.
"W-why?" I took her a step away from the edge.
"You seem like someone interesting."
"I don't understand," she started speaking so fast that her words began to mix together, "why do you care? Why did you come here? Why? Why do you care?"
I pulled her into a hug and she began sobbing into my shoulder. I held her close and sat us down near the wall. I stroked her hair and rubbed her back while she sobbed. She eventually ended asleep in my embrace.I craftily peeled off my coat and put it around her. She slept so peacefully and her breaths were so slow. I stayed up all night and let her sleep on me. Her eyes reminded me of a wild and scared animal so much that I wanted, had, to take care of her.
The next morning, I took her home. My roommate was at work and I had the day off. I shared breakfast with her -bagels and cream cheese.
"I hope you don't mind me asking," I swallowed quickly, "what's your name?"
"Oh," her eyes wandered down and she broke off a piece of her bagel, "it's Jennifer, but I go by Jenni."
"Nice to met you, Jenni," I began and smiled, "my name is Jesse. No 'i'."
"I don't mean to bother you. I can leave anytime you want."
"I don't mind you being here. Stay as long as you need. I know my roommate will like you and I put my dog in his cage just in case dogs aren't your cup of tea."
She looked up at me and smiled. The grin on my face widened and the mutual happiness felt like sparks in the air.
"Can I meet him?"
"Of course."
