Prologue
He slips the ring onto my thumb, only to have it fall right off. He puts his hands around my finger to keep it in place.
“This ring will always protect you.” He says. He looks deep into my eyes. I wont ever take it off.
“I love you daddy.” I wrap my arms around his neck and burry my face in the hood of his sweatshirt.
“I love to you Skye. Forever. Always.”
Chapter 1
I twist the ring on my pinky. Moving it from my right hand to my left. Its beginning to take some effort. Its getting tight.
Im standing in the middle of what used to be my room. Now its just an empty, dismal space. I lift up my backpack and swing it over my shoulder, take a deep breath, and turn around and never look back. As I step outside, I hear a horn blare.
“Skye! Hurry, we’ll miss our flight.” My mom calls from the drivers seat of our rav 4. I jog over to the car, swing the door open and get in.
I headed up the stares of what is now my house. Legend, my younger brother, pushes around me.
“Skye!” he shrieks. “Move it! Your too slow.”
I sigh. Living with a seven year old is difficult. Especially now that I don’t have my dad to back me up.
When my dad died, I literally though it was some sort of sick joke. Why me? How is this possible? I would stay awake at night, waiting to hear the sound of a car door slamming, his footsteps down the hall, and the creak of my door. I couldn’t believe he was gone.
The doctors said it was a tumor, lying dormant for years. All of a sudden it hit. Hard. It was so fast. One minuet he was standing right in front of me. Then he was light-year away.
Unfortunately the only job my mom could get on such short notice, was across the pacific ocean, in Alaska. I’ve lived all of my seventeen years in warm, sunny, California. Alaska probably would have been my last choice of states to move to.
I finish unpacking in just two days, which means I have to start school. Ill be starting in the middle of junior year. I wish I could have started with everyone else, in the beginning of the year, but we didn’t hadn’t enough money for the house at that point.
“Breakfast.” My mom calls from the kitchen.
I heave my body out of bed, throw on some clothes, walk to the bathroom, put on makeup and head down. My mom went all out this morning. Bacon, eggs and pancakes cover the table.
“whats the occasion?” I ask.
“Oh, nothing.” She replies. “just to fill your belly for your first day. Studies show that eating a good breakfast helps you think.” Leave it to my mom to base her parenting on science.
After I shoved my food into my mouth, I grab my keys and head out. I find a spot pretty easily and climb out of the car. Since I dont have my schedule yet, I walk to the office.
“Name please.” The pear shaped woman behind the desk grumbles.
“Skye Alice.” I say in my most professional voice.
“Ok, one moment. Let me enter you into our system.”
I turn around and take a seat in one of the chairs in the waiting area, next to a tall guy wearing a leather blazer. His eyes drift over to mine.
