"I bet that's not even her real name. I bet she's just making it up!" Amanda joins in, folding her arms next to Anthony with a sneer.
"I guess you would know if someone was fake. After all, it takes one to know one," Tess smirks, standing up and facing them. I stand next to her, trying to smirk threateningly.
"Yeah, what she said. B-words," I smile trying to act tough, failing to do so in the process. Everyone looks at me weirdly and Tess whispers in my ear,
"Let me do the talking, okay?" She looks back at them and folds her arms.
"Trying to act tough? Wow, you are stupid, aren't you," Anthony laughs, grabbing Tess by the arms and she shuts her eyes as he raises his fist.
"No!" I scream, kicking Anthony where the sun don't shine, instinct taking over my body.
"What the hell?" Amanda mumbles, walking backwards slowly, "What is this kid?" I kick her chest causing her to fall to the ground and punch her face, knocking her out cold. I pick up our trays and smash it into their ugly faces, grinning mischievously.
"What is going on here?" The strict woman from earlier screams, walking over to where we were. Anthony groans, covering his crotch, and points at me,
"It was her, Ms. Green. She went wild and started attacking us!" He wipes some ketchup off his forehead and makes a disgusted face, "Gross."
"You," she glares at me, grabbing my arm tightly, causing me to wince in pain and fear, "are coming with me." I let out a small whimper as she drags me to the Headmasters office. "Wait here until he calls for you." She points to a wooden bench just outside the office door and I sit obediently, fidgeting with my fingers nervously. She walks inside and closes the door, my head pounding. The clock above the office door ticks and my heart beats loudly in my chest, I think to myself, what's going to happen? Seconds turn to minutes, minutes into hours, but still no sign of when I am going to see my fate in all of this. The door opens widely and Ms. Green steps into the hallway, grinning at me nastily.
"Send her in," the Headmaster booms angrily.
"Yes Sir. Come in, Rebel." She glares down at me as I stand and quickly walk into the office, trembling slightly.
"Sit," the Headmaster orders. I do as he says and sit in the same wooden chair as before. "So, causing trouble on the first day I see. I'd like you to explain something to me," he leans his fat elbows on his desk and looks deeply into my dark blue eyes, "why can I not find you anywhere? No school work, no birth certificate, nothing. You don't seem to exist in the world. No one has heard or seen you before. Care to explain this?"
I look down at my hands and sigh, "Sir, my very existence is something I don't think I'll ever quite understand. You see, my father despised me and everything I am. I was born at home and was never allowed outside, forget about having friends or going to school."
"What is your name? I don't believe your real name is Rebel, no parent would name you that."
"My name is Rebel," I say without any hints of emotion in my steady voice.
"Right, well, I can't let you go unpunished for harming two of your fellow orphans. Imagine how it would make me look! So, your punishment is to clean the boys and girls bathroom for a week. Including the staff bathroom. Here is the key," he opens a drawer from under his desk and hands it to me. "Is that understood?"
"Yes sir," I say with relief in my voice, afraid to have been beaten by my wrong doings. I take the key and clench it in my fist, ignoring the pain in my palm.
"Good, you may start tomorrow. Go." He leans back into his chair and closes his eyes, ready for a nap. I stand up and head for the door, opening it and hurriedly walking up the stairs to the girls dormitory.
"She lives!" Tess smiles, grabbing my arm and dragging me to her bed, "So, what happened? How much trouble did you get in? Did you rat out on Amanda and Anthony?"
"No," I reply, "I don't want to get on their bad side anymore."
"You don't have to worry about them for a while," Tess giggles, "I heard you sent them straight to the nurse's' office."
"Really?" My face instantly flushed red with embarrassment. She nods excitedly and the lights suddenly shut off, causing me to scream in fear.
"Lights out!" I hear Ms. Green shout from downstairs.
"Seems to me like she already did that for us," I murmured, trying to hold back my fear of the dark. I stand, walk over to my bed, and lay down. The bed feels so comfortable, the most comfortable thing I have ever laid on in all my life. I think back at the old bed I used to have, full of lumps and without sheets. I stare quietly at the ceiling, thinking about what future I could possibly have. What future? You won't have a future as long as you stay here, you killed everyone you know! It's only a matter of time before poor Tessa goes too, the voice sneers in my head.
"Shut up," I whisper, tears clouding my eyesight, "I won't let her die. I won't, I promise."
"Rebel, is that you?" Tess whispers, rubbing her eyes tiredly, "Go back to sleep, 'k?"
"Alright," I respond, laying on my side and closing my eyes.
