Delilah twisted the flower around her pinky. It blossomed up, spreading its petals to their fullest. Delilah sighed and looked around the meadow.
She saw bees buzz around flowers, oblivious to her. Butterflies rode the soft breeze, dancing every so often upon a flower. Hummingbirds zoomed among the trees and flowers, as if the nectar they drank were full of an energizing drink that constantly gave them a double shot of espresso. Delilah wanted so badly to become one of them, so free and graceful and beautiful, she wanted so badly she felt as if she just wanted a little bit more, she would transform from her not-so-human body, from her outcast self, into one of those magnificent creatures.
Suddenly, she felt as if a cold wind shot threw the warmth of the meadow, killing the peacefulness. Bees buzzed off into the safety of their hives. Butterflies danced away. Hummingbirds zoomed off to a warmer place. But Delilah had to stay. She had nowhere to go. And she felt as if she stood up, she would become one with the meadow. Dead.
Delilah stayed unmoving where she sat. She willed the grass to rise higher, slowly, to hide her from her hunters view. The grass rose above her head, hiding her in its tendrils. She heard the grass whisper to her about rustling to her left, boots stamping out the lives of the grass that surrounded her.
Delilah knew they were getting closer. She knew they would find her. But she would not go down as easily as those strands of grass.
She would fight back.
Delilah closed her eyes, soaking up those last calm, yet strange, moments of silence in the almost empty meadow. She relished the sweet smell of the dewy grass, and the colorful wildflowers. She imagined the sounds that would flow through the meadow after all this. She imagined her joining in the glorious musical of the birds, flying forever.
Delilah smiled.
When she opened her eyes, her hunter stood in front of her.
"Hello Daniel. Come to enjoy the day here?" Delilah spoke in not much more than a murmur. Dark, angry clouds rolled over the treetops to cloud and darken the meadow.
"Hello, freak." Daniel sneered. "You know very well why I'm here, monster."
"I prefer to be called Delilah, thank you." Delilah stood, dusting her pants off. She looked up,"Oh dear. It looks like a bit of rain might be joining us today. Do you like rain still? You did when we were younger."
"Shut up Delil-freak. You may come along quietly, and easily, or you can make it harder on yourself. Either way, you know how this is going to end," Daniel smirked, narrowing his eyes.
Delilah twitched her hand, ever so slightly. Vines silently protruded from the ground, wrapping quietly around Daniel's ankles, anchoring him to the ground. But Daniel didn't notice. Not yet.
"I think you know what I choose, my dearest Daniel. But I don't think it'll be as easy as you think it might be," Delilah shakes her head softly. "No no no, not easy at all..."
With that, she shoots both hand over her head in a lifting manner. The vines that had been winding up Daniel's leg shot up from the ground, pulling Daniel off his feet onto his face. Daniel grabs the knives off from around his belt and saws off the vines from his legs. While he is doing that, Delilah grows a tree next to her, and as the tree grows, Delilah gets carried to the top. She barely dodges the dagger which is thrown up at her, which gets lodged in the still growing tree. She seethes as the pain from the cut grabs her arm. Taking a deep breath she uses the branches to entwine Daniel in their grasp, making sure that the branches wrap around his waist and arms, so that he can't use his weapons. But to her dismay, his radio was already in his hand and he was grinning.
"You may be able to me on, but with the rest of my squad? You stand no chance," Daniel snarled through a pained grin. Delilah tightened her fist and the branches tightened and wrapped around his mouth, like a gag.
"Maybe not, but I won't go down without a fight," Delilah glared, her nose high.
She crafted a swing out of the branches and leaves, and sat and swung in the starting rain until she heard the drowning roar of the cars used by Daniel's squad. Delilah sighed, yet again.
She heard the marching as they came smashing into the meadow, her meadow. She would make them pay for killing the sweet grass, and those fragrant wildflowers. She swiped her hand and the ground beneath the soldiers feet lifted 10 feet into the air, with them on it, before crumbling to bits back into the ground. The soldiers rolled to a stop in the mud, clearly bruised. As quickly as they fell, they got back up, starting to march again, at a slower pace, by cause of the rain.
Delilah knew she could have ran while she waited for them to arrive, but she was tired of running. She wanted to be who she was, screw those people who called her a monster. She snapped her hand and the branches holding Daniel came down to her side. She didn't even look at him.
When the soldiers got within 10 feet, she called out to them,"I'd stop there if I were you. It's not very safe with all the rain. One might...slip." When Delilah said slip she twisted her hand and the branches around Daniel tightened slightly. The soldiers stopped almost immediately. One soldier raised his hand, and Delilah snapped a hand up, and a vine shot out of the ground and wrapped around the soldier from waist to shoulders, pinning his arms against him. She saw a flicker of movement out of the corner of her eye, a glint of metal in the rain. On the edge of the forest where the soldiers had come from. She swept her eyes over the group of soldiers in front of her quickly. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10. There were 12 in Daniel's squad. 11 minus Daniel. Where was the 11th soldier? A second later, her question was answered.
A bullet from a sniper shot her in her abdomen. Delilah screamed. Her fists clenched shut for a few seconds, which tightened the branches and vines around Daniel and the soldier, so tight they couldn't breathe, before opening completely. The vines around the soldier loosened, as did the branches around Daniel. The tree, and everything else Delilah had grown or healed throughout the world shriveled up and died. Delilah was lifted onto a platform and tied down with straps, and a metal choker that zapped her anytime she tried to use her powers was placed around her neck.
Tears filled Delilah's eyes as she was lifted away to the soldiers' vehicles, from both pain and sorrow. She looked Daniel in the eye and whispered,"I thought you were my brother."
Daniel stared back at her with disdain,"I am not a brother to a monster."
