Travel far and wide

A twig snaps to my right and in an instant I'm sitting upright with a knife poised to be thrown. It's a rabbit. I throw the knife and it impales it. I get up and take the knife out, I'll skin and cook it later. Right now I need to move, I'm too close to the careers for comfort.

I make my way towards a creek and start following that upstream, it may take me to a cove that I can hide in, or there may be a good hideout really close to the water. Otherwise I'll have to fill up my canteen and ration it.

I walk for maybe two hours before I see signs of life, a camp fire off to my right, the smoke could be seen miles away, the careers probably have already spotted it, I need to get out of here. I start running, still following the stream. I only stop because I can't possibly run any further.

I lean against a tree to catch my breath. I let my guard down for all of two seconds when I feel something pointed against my back. I slowly turn around. There's a boy, probably four inches shorter than me holding a spear he definitely made himself against me.

"I don't want to hurt you," I tell him "I'm just trying to get away from the careers, just let me leave."

He shakes his head no and presses the spear into me, hard enough to draw blood. In one swift move I yank the spear from his grasp and kick his legs out from underneath him. I point the spear at his chest.

"Was that your campfire a few miles back?" I ask, he nods "got allies there?" he nods again "the careers have seen it by now, you need to go back and warn them, put out the fire and run, fast and far," I order, I then pull the spear away from him and he scrambles up. He starts to run away "hey, kid!" I yell, he turns back and I chuck him his spear, he catches it, nods his head at me and bolts.

I continue on my way.

.......

By midday the canon went off four times.

By sundown I reach a fork in the creek, one continues on and the other bends off and filters into the cove of sorts with a cave. I walk into the cave the water laps in for a meter or so and then it's dry, but it's moist and cool, a relief from the blaring, glaring sun I've been walking in all day.

I drop my bag and walk back out to the cove, I splash my face and kick off my shoes to dip my toes in it. It's cool and refreshing. I step out of the wood and go in search of fire wood and kindling. I take it back to the cave and start a fire to roast my rabbit. I forgot to wrap the rabbit in leaves and the sun has rotted it. I'll need to go out to try and hunt something else.

I trek through the woods hoping to stumble across something. Nothing is around, so instead I set up rabbit traps so at least I'll have dinner tomorrow night.

I fill up on water before climbing into the sleeping bag and falling asleep under the soft glow of the small, dying fire.

......

"Peeta," I gasp in shock, he's lying near me in the cave.

"Hiya Katniss," he groans. I crawl over to him and look at his badly bandage bloody leg.

"What happened?" I ask.

"The careers didn't appreciate me letting you go," he mumbles.

"Oh god, Peeta, you should've come with me," I whisper.

"I was hoping to trick them into believing you ran another way, but they didn't," he looks so disappointed in himself.

"Hey, hey, hey, thanks Peeta, you saved my life, I have no idea what kind of torture they had prepared for me," I assure him, stroking his sweaty golden hair "how'd you get here?" I ask.

"About that..." he trails off and a shadow falls over us as a body blocks the sun.

"Hey Peeta I got some fern that I think helps.... Oh Katniss is awake," Cato stands over me holding some fern leaves.
