Today marks two weeks since my first day of school here at Edgewater Christian Academy. And, if I'm really being honest, I kind of love it here. Having my own room is excellent, being away from my parents is liberating, and making new friends has proved surprisingly easy for me. Within the first few days, Bryn and I became joined at the hip. We eat practically every meal together, we attend every class together, and we even workout together on Monday and Wednesday nights. I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I think I've settled in quite nicely here.
Of course, I get the occasional spell of homesickness. This, however, is quickly cured after a call to my parents. Not to mention the fact that they can visit whenever they feel the need. Most of the time I'm distracted by current events, so I don't get the chance to get homesick. But some girls will cry all hours of the night about missing their families and others will talk to their parents on the phone for hours. I think that I'm doing pretty well.
Tonight is like any other Friday night. Bryn and I are lying on my bed, talking about numerous things and scrolling through social media on our phones. I lie on my side with my head on my pillow and my knees pulled close to my chest. Bryn lies on her back with her feet touching the windowsill and her head hanging off of the bed. We've been like this for a few hours now, debating what we should get for dinner.
"I really want pizza, though." Bryn whines.
"You always want pizza." I groan, putting my foot in her face.
She swats my toes away and sits up, "Well I don't want to have to go to the cafeteria and get food, it's such a far walk."
"Let's order Chinese!" I shout as I switch to the phone app.
"Okay, I want a two item combo with double teriyaki chicken, fried rice, and chow mein. Also, can we get some egg rolls?" Bryn asks with excitement.
"Sure, yeah, whatever." I laugh as I call the Chinese food place.
I put in our order and hang up, beginning the excruciating wait for the food. Bryn and I migrate to the couch in the living room and try to find a good movie to watch. All that's on is reruns of old cartoons. We're halfway into our second episode of Rugrats when there's a knock at the door. Bryn springs to her feet and swings the door open. I walk to the door while Bryn takes the food and scrambles back to the couch. I pay the delivery person with the addition of a generous tip and shut the door. I sit down beside Bryn and open up my box, which has become somewhat of a holy grail to my growling stomach. We feast on our delivery dinner and finish another three episodes of Rugrats when there's another knock at the door. Bryn lifts an eyebrow and gestures to the door. I look at the clock before rising to my feet.
It's nearly midnight.
I approach the door and look through the peephole. I can't see anything, just blackness. I knit my brows in frustration and crack the door open.
"Hello?" I ask in a rather apprehensive fashion.
"Hey, it's Sawyer." A familiar voice says, "Are you busy?"
The hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I hear Bryn stirring behind me.
"Um, hold on just a second." I reply.
I accidentally slam the door and turn around to face Bryn. She shakes her head and looks like she has just heard some awful news.
"What? What is it? What's wrong?" I whisper-yell.
"Sawyer wants to hang out with you oh god, oh god, oh god." Bryn says, trailing off and mumbling to herself.
"Should I say no?! What do I do?" I panic in a hushed tone and Bryn grabs my face.
