Old habits die hard

The next day I woke up happily unlike I normally do. Today might just be different now that me and Lexington seem to be friendlier than usual. Before he left last night he told me he would drive me to school from now on. I hoped it wasn't just another prank to embarrass me. I have had enough of that. I took a quick shower then picked out my outfit. A loose fitting black T-shirt that said "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" though I don't believed that since my parents died and I feel weaker than normal. A pair of ripped old denim skinny jeans and my usual black converses. I left my hair down and grabbed my back pack and went to the kitchen. The house was nothing special. A little one story with 2 bedrooms,one bathroom, a kitchen, and a living room. We couldn't afford anything bigger with my paycheck from working at the coffee shop down the street. I made enough to pay for food, the house bills and and other needs we might have. The only problem is hiding from foster care until I'm 18. If they take us in, we may be split up and I made a promise to mom and dad to always protect Lacey no matter what. So I did. I made breakfast and helped Lacey get ready for school. After she got on the bus I took off walking. Then I remembered Lexington was going to pick me up. Just I got back home he was pulling up at the curb. I walked to the passenger side and slid in. I looked over at Lexington who was smiling at me. " what" I asked. He said "you forgot didn't you?" I smiled and said "Yeah." He laughed and said "I forgive you. If....." I said "If what?" He replied "You sit with me at lunch" I blushed and said "No I'm OK. I have something I have to do at lunch" He said. "Like what? Sit by yourself in the library." I blushed and looked down. He started the car and drove to school. "I'm not trying to embarrass you. I'm just trying to help you......ummm...embrace your true self. Become who you're really meant to be." I smiled and said "Okay. Just please don't sit with all those kids from yesterday. I don't need that stress." He grabbed my hand and said "never would I do that to you." We pulled up at the school and everyone looked at Lexington's car. Rumors are probably spreading about what he did yesterday. He got out and I went to open my door but he beat me to it. I got out and waited for Lexington to close the door. He locked his car and joined me on the walk to the building. I started to get really nervous as we approached the students and Lexington must have sensed it because he grabbed my hand and squeezed for support. I felt a sense of calm come over me after that. Like a sign from my parents telling me it's ok. I smiled and squeezed back. We walked by all the stating people and suddenly the song "bad reputation " popped into my head. I have a bad habit of matching songs in with moments in my life. I guess old habits die hard.
