I guess getting here a day early was everyone’s idea, I thought staring with wide frightened blue eyes at the swarming students. Some were saying hi to old friends and some were talking to teachers about how to find their room. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea, I thought while I watched my dad trying to pry more of my luggage out of the trunk of his old red convertible.
“I told you not to put it all in the trunk but do you listen to me? Of course you don’t.” my mom said her hands on her hips as she watched him with disapproving eyes.
I shook my head and headed over to them smiling. I gently took the luggage from my dad’s hands and tugged on it as hard as I could. I felt it getting loose just as I fell backwards landing on my butt, but the luggage was out so I smiled.
“I loosened it.” My dad said smiling embarrassedly making me giggle.
“Oh honey, are you okay?” my mom asked me worriedly.
That’s one of the reasons my parents got divorced. They took such different approaches to life and parenting. My dad was more happy go lucky and all for letting me get scrapes and bruises while my mom was always a worrier and babied me. At least they would come together and keep the peace for my sake I know plenty of parents who wouldn’t do even that much.
“I’m fine ma.” I said getting up and dusting off the back of my jeans.
“Are you fine with everything?” my dad asked knowingly.
I bit my lip and looked at the school. I thought about it for a minute, mostly I daydreamed about going back home. I knew that wasn’t really an option and I knew I wouldn’t benefit at all from that choice.
I smiled and faced my dad. “I’ll be fine.” I said reassuringly.
“Okay. We’ll see you in 2 months on the first parents visiting day.” My mom said then gave me a kiss on the cheek.
“Have a good time.” My dad whispered ruffling my golden blonde hair.
I playfully glared at him for ruining my hair.
“Dad I am a teenage girl. You cannot go touching my hair all the time.” I said crossing my arms across my chest.
“Oh, ‘cause it took you so long to do it this morning.” He said rolling his eyes.
“It did! A whole five minutes of my life that’s gone.” I said smiling at him.
He smiled and got in the car and they pulled away. After watching them leave, I took a deep breath and looked up at the intimidating school. There were seven buildings on campus. One was the main building, the actual school with all the classrooms. Then there was the girls’ dorms and the boy dorms which were separate and two levels each. Then there was an old style church, the teachers living quarters, a gym, and a place where they keep all the animals. They have dragons, horses, wolves, and griffons. Then there’s a bunch of random cats that wander the campus.
I picked up one of my bags and looked through it trying to find the map of the school. Someone tapped me on the shoulder and I dropped the bag, half of my stuff fell out. I quickly bent down to gather it all feeling slightly annoyed but mostly embarrassed for being in such a cliché nerd experience such as dropping all my crap on the first day.
