The twigs and leaves crunched under her feet as she ran. She wished for nothing more than to slow down and take a break, the running from the past few days was killing her. She didn't think she could last. She knew she would not last if she kept this up.

She began to slow down, her legs and knees shaking from the stain put on them. She contemplated whether or not to take a break or continue. Her body begged her to stop, but she knew that she shouldn't.

That's when she heard the barking of the dogs.

I have to hide. She thought to herself. Quickly scoping out the area around her, she noticed a tree that she thought she might be able to climb. She grabbed onto some of the lower branches, attempting to pull herself up until she finally getting her footing. She ascended higher into the tree, scrapping her arms and hands on the rough bark as she did so.

Once she heard the dogs getting closer she immediately laid down flat against one of the larger branches nearest her, praying to the old gods and the new that they wouldn't find her.

She held her breath when the dogs came into view under the heavy fog, knowing that the slightest of sounds would alert them. The silence in the wood ran thick, as she heard the heavy steps of a few armed men nearing where the dogs were now circling under the tree she was in.

"Where the fuck did that brat go now?" One of the men exclaimed as he looked around. She silently thanked the fact that the fog seemed to hide her place among the branches.

After awhile it seemed the dogs had caught another scent, quickly running off in a different direction. The men grumbled something that she couldn't quite make out, though she assumed it was something that had to do with their inability to to find her. She let out a quiet laugh though she dared not move just in case they were to return.

She couldn't quite tell how long she had been up there after awhile, though she now noticed that night had now fallen and with it the wind picked up. Carefully she pushed herself up from the branch, looking down. the height at which she was at made her dizzy causing her to lose her balance slightly. She gripped the branch, that was now swaying with the wind, as hard as she could to stabilize herself.

The branch then creaked, before a chilling crack was heard.

Her heart dropped. The branch was beginning to break and she knew if she moved an inch she would fall. Her breathing became ragged, as her nails dug into the bark of the branch.

It's not that far I wouldn't die. She thought in a feeble attempt to calm herself down, hoping that this wasn't really happening.

She tried backing up closer to the trunk of the big tree, causing the branch to creak more and more. She had almost made it far enough to save herself, before the branch finally gave out.

For a moment she felt lighter then air. She wondered if the fall would kill her, and half of her hoped it would. But before she hit the ground, the bittersweet comfort of darkness overtook her.
