Today i woke up to what sounded like a siren. i faintly noticed it turning into toned beeps. Then i realized it was my alarm i set the night before.
I turn my head to those flashing blue numbers blinking "6:30 am".
"This is it....time for school." i say to myself, hoping it could give me some type of comfort.
I get up, get dressed, and eat my daily breakfast of buttered toast.
Every morning before school I visit my grandpa at his caring headquarters. I head to the door, grab my book bag, and head out. As I walk down the sidewalk headed toward town where my grandfathers headquarters is located. As I walk down Phillips road I see kids playing with soccer balls, chalk, and frisbee's. I also happen to see kids that go to my school walking to school probably. I make a few rights and lefts as I approach the caring headquarters. I walk down the graveled walk way heading toward the sliding glass doors. I walk into the building and approach the first nurse I see. "Taylors residents please". " yes, room 301" the nurse says without eye contact. "Thanks,...I guess". I have to ask what room every time because they change it up about every two weeks. I see room 301 as i walk down the hall. All i hear is my grandpa coughing from the room, hacking up a storm almost.
"Grandpa?" i say, slowly approaching the room door. I walk to the door frame, " grandpa, are you alright?" i say hugging the door frame. "I could send for a aid to come get you?" " no" he pauses to cough again. " I'm fine...come in, come in.....I'll be fine". I walk in slowly looking around the room, then decide its alright so I pick up my pace a little to sit in a chair right beside my grandfather's bed. As I sit I get startled while my grandfather coughs again, not as bad as last time, but I could still feel his pain in his throat. Before I could get anything out of my mouth, my grandfather spoke "how was your morning so far angel?". "Fine...I guess...how was yours grandpa?". He paused to stare at me for quite some seconds. Then he spoke, two words that sent bone cold shivers down my spine, along with my arms and legs. "It's coming".
" its coming?" I tried to process what he meant...but nothing. "What do you mean grandpa.....it's coming?". "You will know....." he takes in a deep breath, almost like he's gasping for air, "when the time comes...you will know". His words roll of his tongue, like a slow breeze going through a open window. I think of all the reasons why he would say that, but then I thought....he is in his late 70's, so maybe he's going through a old...person..stage, or something.
"OK grandpa...well I have to get to school" I began to walk toward the door. " I will send someone to get you your breakfast... love you". Before I get out the door he says those same comforting words back. " I love you to sweetie" and I walk off.
