Applekit was stumbling through the snowy forest. She didn't know why she was here, shouldn't she be in the camp, nuzzled up to her mother and siblings in the warm nursery? She could sense two cats ahead of her, and two smaller cats beside her. The two bigger cats stopped, and crouched down, bristling and hissing. Ahead of the tiny group of cats, was a huge black and white creature.
As the oldest, more protective sibling, Applekit instinctively shoved Waterkit and Gorsekit behind her. She quickly dug a hole in the snow, and threw her siblings into the hole. She filled in the hole, covering them and masking their scent.
She backed up slowly, and bumped into a tree. She turned and tried to haul her tiny body up onto a low branch, her tiny claws snagging in the crumbly bark.
She scrambled onto the branch, and panted from effort. The stench of the large creature wreathed around her. She sneezed. The badger looked up, its beady black eyes glittering. It began to lumber over to the branch.
The two bigger cats, a black tom and a light brown she-cat yowled and jumped on the beast. They clawed at it, and bit it fiercly.
The badger tried to shake them off, but their claws were latched in its thick skin. It stomped forwards. Its huge paw smashed down on the place Applekit had hidden her siblings. Applekit wailed in grief. She flung herself down from the branch onto the badger's face.
She began clawing at its eyes, feeling the sticky blood flow from under her claws. She hated the feeling of it covering her paw. She bit down on the badger's small ear and tore. She felt her teeth rip through it's ear, into nothing.
The animal roared, and shook her off. She was flung off it's face, and landed a fox-length away. She saw the light brown she-cat dart under the badger, and tried to slice its belly.
It reared up on it's back legs, and smashed down on the she-cat. The black tom screeched. "HOLLYSTORM!" He picked up Applekit up, and shoved her into a small hole, probably a squirrel hole, and left her there.
She couldn't see anything, but she could hear the roars of the badger and the caterwauls of the tom. She could hear the roars fading, and then suddenly they were gone. She heard some grief-stricken sobs. Applekit wriggled from the hole, and looked around. There was blood staining the snow, and signs of struggle everywhere.
She raced over to the place where she had hidden Waterkit and Gorsekit. She dug in the snow franticly, stopping when she felt the faint warmth of a pelt. She pulled both of the kits carefully from the hole, and began licking them gently, but fiercly.
Gorsekit let out a feeble cough. Her eyes fluttered open, and she let out a wheeze. Waterkit let out a howl of pain. Applekit looked over to him. He had his eyes open. His breathing was choppy and uneven.
"Sister.... Thank.. You... For trying.. To save us...." Gorsekit rasped.
"Im nearly in StarClan... I can feel... Them around me.... Calling me.." Waterkit coughed in pain.
"N-no! Don't l-leave me! I n-need you! Hollystorm is dead, and Blackwing is g-gone! I have no one else!" she wailed. The two dying kits let out feeble purrs. "We will be with you always" Waterkit wheezed. Gorsekit's eyes suddenly went ablaze.
In a voice that wasn't her's, she uttered: "In the time of darkness, Apple,
Black,
Lone,
Fawn,
Mallow,
Ash,
Bramble,
Silver,
Dusk,
Poppy,
Hawk,
Snow,
Blood,
Echo and Sea, shall unite, along with StarClan, to defeat the darkness that with try and drown the clan." Gorsekit's eyes went back to normal.
"I love you sister" she murmured and closed her eyes, then her breathing became quick and shallow, before stopping all together.
Applekit howled in grief. Waterkit began to wheeze again. Applekit looked over at her brother.
"Don't die!" She begged. Waterkit began to purr softly again.
"I love you too sister. But I must go. We will see each other again. You have a great destiny...." He trailed off, and his broken body jerked once, and then he went still.
"NOOOO! WATERKIT! GORSEKIT!!!!" Applekit screamed. She sobbed. She was furious, and full of grief. she looked over at the hole. She stumbled over to it, and began digging. She didn't stop digging until there was a deep enough hole to fit two full grown cats.
She slowly walked from the hole to her siblings. She picked them both up, and gently placed them into the hole. She quickly filled it in, and covered the spot in snow, so that no foxes, badgers or dogs could smell them and dig them up.
She began her journey back to camp, her broken claws not even bothering her. She reached the camp entrance.
She braced herself, and ran into camp, wailing "MY PARENTS ARE DEAD!"
