"Sorry," Bex said. "I didnt mean to scare you."

"Its not an act, Bex," i said. "i really dont remember."

She crossed her arms and cocked a hip. "Why you left? Or why you didnt come back?"

"I know why i left," I shot back.

"Really?" Bex asked. "Because i don't."

"What was i suppose to do, Bex? Keep going until you ended up in a coma? Until Liz ended up dead?"

"You didnt have to go on your own," she countered

"Yes! I did."

"The Circle need me alive!" I yelled, and watched her stop, but she didnt face me. "They would have killed you, Bex. They would of killed anyone with me without a second thought. But me... They need me alive."

"That's funny" Bex turned "because you look half dead from here."

No the screaming belonged on a different mountain. I shook my head and focused on the sound of Bex's cries. I wasn't in Austria. And i wasn't broken or beaten or worn. Not anymore.

She was on an outcropping of rock near the top of the hill, the shooter maybe three feet away. Bex lunged, striking the man, but he didn't fall. And as he shifted his weight, Bex crashed to the ground.

"No!" I screamed just as the man raised the butt of his rifle. But Bex twisted and kicked, sending the gun out of his hand and skidded across the rocks.

And i kept running.

Bex swept her leg and knocked him off his feet. But the man was so fast, it didn't matter. He hit Bex hard across the face, sending her tumbling down the hill. Everything seemed to happen in slow motion as i reached the top of the ridge. There were no trees or shadows, and that was probably why it was so easy to see the knife ~ shiny and clean. The sun glistened off the blade as the gunman pulled it from the sheath on his leg and lunged towards Bex. She tried to block the blow, but the man was so strong. And the next thing i knew, there was a splatter of blood and Bex was screaming, her face a mix if shock and fear and.... Relief as the man fell to the ground and didn't move again.

"I killed a man, Bex."

"He would have killed me," she said slowly, swagger gone. Ever since I'd known her, Bex had seemed practically bullet proof; but standing there, with blood on her sleeve she trembled. " I would have died."

"I don't even remember picking up the gun," i said, realizing that that was the most terrifying thing of all.

"I'm alive because you picked it up," Bex tolled me.

So instead i just said, "Waffles. I'm craving waffles."

Bex rolled onto her side. "Tell your waffles hi for me."

"I killed someone," I said.

"You saved Bex," he countered.

"They think I'm dangerous. They think~"

"They don't know you!"

"I killed a man," I said.

"Yes, you did."

"He was going to stab Bex, so... I killed him."

"And how does that make you feel?".....

"Us?" Bex's voice sounded even more mischievous than usual when she appwared in the door wat and crossed her arms the turned to the girk behind her. "What do you think, Macey? I think she's talking about us."

"Its not Cam's fault," Bex told her. "We rigged her bed so if she gets up, i get an electric shock."
