{Dedicated to E.R.W., with whom I am more in love with than I ever thought possible.}
3.27 am, Thursday 24th March
Ring, ring, ring.
"Hannah?" I whispered, throwing the sheets from my burning skin. As soon as I began to walk towards where she was laying on the floor of my living room, I shivered. It was cold and I was nervous. "Hannah, your phone."
"Yeah, sorry dude," She muttered sleepily, "Ignore it."
"Okay," I sat down next to her, on top of her duvet. Hannah, Mamrie and I had all constructed makeshift beds on the floor from anything soft and warm that we had found earlier that day.
Somehow, I found myself on my side, facing Hannah. I noticed that her eyes were no longer half-closed, but sparkling with anticipation. Our faces weren't quite level, and she moved down a little so as to look at me. Her arm was draped loosely over my shoulder, and my hand was resting on her waist.
The air in the room seemed to thicken, and neither of us could stop ourselves from shaking. We had both known the inevitability of what was about to happen for a while, but that didn't make the moment any less terrifying.
I couldn't stop my thoughts from cramming themselves into my mind and fighting for dominance. Did I want the whole dynamic our friendship to change? What if I was a bad kisser? What if this was a prank, or - even worse - what if Mamie woke up?
All of a sudden, her lips were on mine. I didn't know how - I still don't. I didn't care. Everything stopped, and the only things that I could feel were our mouths working together, and the way her body was pressed up against mine. I didn't feel scared, or worried, or awkward. I felt right.
We stayed like that for what seemed like eons, but was probably more like minutes, wrapped up in one another. I pushed myself up onto my elbows and looked down at her, biting my lip.
"As much as I'd like you to stay here with me, I think Mames might get a bit suspicious," Hannah murmured, tracing patterns into my cheek softly with her fingertips. I nodded in acquiescence, pressing one last, lingering kiss to her lips and making my way back to my own duvet-cocoon.
I stared up at the ceiling, my mind racing. Bringing a hand up to my still-tingling lips, I smiled into the darkness. I reached out blindly for my phone, plugging in my earphones and setting my playlist to shuffle.
I fell asleep with an almost euphoric grin on my face, and to the sound of 'She's So Lovely' playing quietly.
That was where it all started, now I just hope it never ends.
