Summer: May 25th

It was just another hot evening in Savannah Georgia when Rodney the Rodent all duked out in his dirty dark blue jeans and sweaty white T, came over to give me a hand with my bags. I was leaving for my Father's in Florida just like I did last summer. It was a way of getting to know him better since he came back into my life after serving his ten year sentence in the Florida State Penitentiary, as my mother said.
"Wipe that look off your face, ya hear?" She said before grabbing my jaw and kissin' me on the forehead. I hated when she did that. My mother was short, about four- four with dark brown eyes and long honey blonde hair just like mine to match her beautiful golden skin. Which I also inherited from her. I gave her a tight long hug before stepping into Rodney's mothers car and waving my last goodbye.
The car was quiet except for the roaring gospel playing through the static on the radio. I was glad that Rodney was sitting in the front. Far away from me.
Ya see, me and Rodent have something of a past back in the old treehouse on the farm I use to live in. We were the best of friends from the stories my mother has told me. Although I can hardly remember. One day in the sixth grade that all stopped. He never told me why but he was so different after. Like I never even existed and on the certain occasions I did I had to pay for it. In pushes and shoves, with dirty looks and stares. With middle fingers and hateful lies being spread. Even though that was four years ago i knew he was only being civil now because his mother was in the same car and she'd kill him if he even looked at me funny.

The warm summer heat blew across my face and through my hair as I pushed my head out of the small car window. It was beautiful. I loved Georgia with every bit of my heart whether it was Savannah, Columbus or even Atlanta. I loved it all and every flaw that came with it. I rubbed my thick peach lips together. They were dry and thirsty so I asked Shandra, Rodney's mother to pull over at McDonald's. I hadn't even realized till now that we were already in Florida. "Four hours gone by that fast?" I said under my breath.
"I'll be back." She snatched her purse up and walked lightly on her two inch heels into the small restaurant.
Once again the car was silent and the chirping of birds outside kept me company until he turned around with a small grin. "You look mighty thick in that dress. Got a boyfriend huh?"
"What's it to ya?" I said folding my arms. I was already starting to fume.
"You ain't cute, Em,"
That's my name. Short for Emerald. Emerald Green. I know, my mother thought it was pretty funny too but through out high school the kids have found it to be more than hilarious.
That, I did not find funny.
He began to flick my thigh with his middle finger and it hurt badly. "Stop!" I said punching him in the arm then noticing how red my leg had turned. "Why you little--" but he began to rub my thigh. I hated it. But I knew I was lying to myself. I could see my face turn red in the rear view mirror. Thankfully his mother walked out with a brown bag in hand full of toxic carbs and a large tea for me. I couldn't stand another moment of this so I slouched back in my seat and slowly sipped.
