Chapter Two:
*
When I figured enough time had passed for everyone to have left school, I fixed my gym shorts and pulled up my bra and left bathroom, hurrying to the doors that led to the student parking lot. Everything seemed all clear- there was just some random kid wearing those seriously unattractive gang wanna-be baggy pants cutting across the far end of the lot.. Keeping his pants from falling down as he walked was taking all his concentration; he wouldn't even notice me. I gritted my teeth against the throbbing pain in my head and bolted out the door, heading straight for my Jeep.
The moment I stepped outside and the sun began to batter me. I mean it wasn't a particularity sunny day; there were plenty of those long, swooshy clouds that looked so pretty in pictures floating along the sky, semi-blocking the sun. But that didn't matter. I gripped my book bag tightly to my chest as I darted to my Jeep. I started only paying attention to the sun that I didn't even notice the truck until it squealed to a stop in front of me.
"Hey Sky! Didn't you get my message?"
Oh shit shit shit! It was Dalton. I glanced up, looking at him from between my fingers like I was watching one of those stupid slasher movies. He was driving his huge truck. Over his shoulder I could see into the back of the cab where Dustin and his brother, Bobby, were doing what they were usually doing-wrestling around and arguing over God knows what stupid boy thing. I glanced back at Dalton walked up to the door. I saw what was in the cup-holder... a big bottle of Vodka, I scowled at Dalton.
"You're drinking at school! Are you stupid?"
His little boy grin got bigger. "Yes I am stupid, 'bout you baby!" He leaned in for a kiss and then I saw what was in the passenger seat. My guitar.
I shook my head while I walked to the passenger side of his truck. I opened the door and grab my guitar, then walked to my Jeep. I opened the creaky door to my Jeep and shoved my guitar and book bag into the passenger's seat.
"Why aren't you at your garage practicing for the game?" I said, as I stuck my head out the sun top while it unrolled.
"Didn't you hear? We got the day off 'cause of the ass-kicking we gave Union on Friday!"
Dustin and Bobbi, who must have been kinda paying attention to Dalton and me after all, did a couple of very Okie "Whoo-hoo!" and "Yeah!" yells from inside the truck.
"Oh. Umm. No. I must've missed the announcement. I've been busy today. You know big geometry test tomorrow." I tried to sound normal and nonchalant. Then I coughed and wiped the sweat from my forehead, and added, "Plus, I'm getting a shitting cold."
"Sky, really. Are you pissed or somethin'? Like, did Matt say some other shit about the party? You know I really didn't cheat on you"
I don't have proof ti'll I go to the hospital to see Ashley. That's when I decided to just go along with the moment. Acting like I didn't know, just so I could snap Dalton's neck and have a good reason. I glared at him with my tired eyes and listened to what he had to say next.
"What did you do, Dalton?"
"Sky, me? You know I wouldn't..." but his innocent act and his excuses faded into and unattractive open-mouthed look of shock when he caught the sight of the sweat rolling down my cheeks. "What the-" started to say before he opened the door and hit the ground to puke out the Vodka he had been chugging.
Great. Wonderful. Dalton, with his usual total and complete lack of anything resembling good sense, thought he was actually standing up for me as he yelled at his friends, who instantly stuck their heads out the windows and gawked at me like I was some science experiment. I instantly wiped my forehead and sat back down in the Jeep.
