I had a bad feeling about this and I understood why. My mother was getting these mysterious phone calls that left her feeling drained. She was sympathetic to us as if we had just lost a relative. And she started to act different. Extra hugs when we left, fresh meals every day and longer more heart felt I love you's. For those reasons it hurt more when she left us.
We have been on the road for aboutan hour since we left are small home in keizer. Now we are some were of the coast of Bay city surrounded by little antique shops. My mother drives us down back roads sterling clear of main ones on are way to are surprise.
I'm sitting in between my sister Melaney and my brother jack. They are both younger than me but people seam to think jack and I are twins. We do look alike but my sister on the other hand doesn't. Her hair and skin are both darker than ours. My mother tells us it's from our fathers side but I guess that Jean wasent passed to us. My older sister ashley who sits in the front search doesn't look like Melaney either. Her long blond hair glowing in the sun as it creeps out from behind the building my mother parks at. We all get out of the old black Suv and I notice we are now surrounded my Acres of corn.
A man about my mother's age approaches us, his suit a little to tight on his body
"Mrs.evans" he says to my mother
"You can call me Katherine" she replies with a smile.us kids all look at each other confused but we draw back in when her says
"Okay Katherine, would you like to join your kids or..."confusing us even more
"Would you mind if I join them?"she asks softly
"Not at all, right this way he says leading us to the door.
Whyle we walk down some hall ways my mother asks the man his name
"Carson" he replies. We walk down multiple hallways and a few stair wells and we arrive in a small conference room, where we are joined by another man in a suit.
"Please take a seat" he announces, I do so and sit next to ashley, the name shakes my mother's hand and went down the line to mine. Introducing himself as mr.perez
"I know you must have many questions but I will answer them after you answer min, okay" he says confidently pulling out 4 files.
"Starting with jack..." he pauses looking at us until jack raises his hand
Mr.perez continues acknowledging jack
"How old are you"
"13" jack says with his head down
Mr.perez writes somthing in the file and provides with the questions
"Can you explain any connection you have had with your father since he left" jack i quiet knowing he was only 2 when are father left and even before that he was never really around.
"No" jack says quietly but firm, Mr. Perez closes the file then grabs another one calling Ashley's then my name. Ashley comments she's 17 and has had no comments to are father. I told him I also had no connections and in 16 years of age.
He gets to Melaney and asks for her age. She responds by saying
"I'm 11 and a half" mr.perez closes her file and lyes it down on the rest of ours. I'm wondering why he didn't ask her about are father and I'm not the only one by the expressions on jack and Ashley's face.
Mr.perez gets up wiping his suit down to flatten it out
"Thank you agian for coming " he says walking out. Before he gets to the door he tells my mother to go with him, she fallows mr.perez out the door keeping eye contact on us until l she disappears through the door.
Mr.perez leaves without answering are questions and I'm not to worried about it. I don't have Many questions but are interaction with mr.perez that felt like an hour left me confused. But I don't want to over think anything so I try to keep my head clear
"Excuses me" Carson says seconds before he is out the door and leaves us in the room. I look around me noticing the marble patter on the walls and the low hanging ceiling fan like the one above my bed at home.
We sit in silence for a whyle until Carson comes in followed by 4 other men. They are color coordinate wearing dark outfits like mr. Perez. they each got a file like Russian Roulette and call off the names. The tallest man with a big chest calls ashley name followed with please come with me. Ashley walks up to the man and he leads her out of the room. The next man calls Melaney's name but she dosent stand up. He calls her name agian and she is still. He must have seen me and jack looking at her because he came around behind her placing his hand under her arm. He dragges her out of her chair but she dosent want freely l. The man almost had to carry her out before the next name calls Jack's name. After jack left I had to leave with the only other names there
