____Neko!Ruben x male reader___

What was it that brought them together, to be united in this perfect love?

On that day, the shadows of his past had become unbearable. Meeting (y/n) brought some light into his life for the first time in a long while. He was his salvation. From then on, Ruben was sometimes needy and close, but then suddenly cold and fearful. (y/n) tried his best to hide his pain, but it was plain in his windows to his soul. That was how it was to this very day.

Yes. He often reflected upon that day with fondness. It was a day that had changed his life, after all.

Ruben, an empty youth with a man's voice and jaw, stood alone on the beach, gazing over the aquamarine water with his morose magenta crystals. His cement-colored hair rustled lightly in the ocean breeze. He tried to deny the stirrings in his heart, resting his cheek against one hand as he hummed "My Immortal" to himself. He wore a milky shirt that left his pale arms bare and a pair of loose ivory jeans. His ashen locks brushed against his earlobes, complementing his agonized lily-white visage. Furry ears flicked at the top of his head, and he twitched his smoke-colored tail. For a moment, he absorbed himself in these thoughts, of him, and (y/n).

His ears pricked at the sound of familiar footsteps. He twitched his tail happily and looked up before (y/n) even spoke a word. "Ruben," he said simply with an admiring look-over and a smile on his face. His (e/c) colored orbs complimented his (h/c) coiffure, brushing against his ears, showing his vibrant heart. He was dressed in refined garb befitting his body. He had a toned but (b/t) build covered with healthily color-touched (s/c) skin. As Ruben drew closer, he caught note of (y/n)'s familiar scent of lingering (f/s) and (2nd f/s). His globes softened. It always reminded him of the time they shared.

"(y/n). I feared you might not come," Ruben whispered.

"Of course I came," he said nonchalantly.

Ruben shook his head. "Everyone else abandoned me."

"I won't leave you," (y/n) said firmly. (y/n) held his hand out to him, and hesitantly Ruben took it. With that, they began to walk along the beach.

Ruben's mind was flooded by painful thoughts. He clung tightly to (y/n)'s calloused hand as if it could save Ruben. He was always relieving that day and he was a freak. (y/n), strong as he was, wouldn't possibly stoop down to help someone like Ruben.

"What is it, Ruben?" (y/n) suddenly asked.

"N-nothing," Ruben whispered. "Why do you ask...?"

"You've got my hand in a death grip." Ruben let his head droop and let go. He was always causing (y/n) trouble.... "I don't mean it like that. I mean if something's bothering you, you should tell me."

"No... (y/n), I couldn't..."

(y/n) looked at Ruben long and hard. (y/n) was struggling to understand what it was that plagued Ruben, but to Ruben, it seemed like he was glaring at him.

"I-I'm sorry, I'm always so..."

"Always so... what?"

"..."

(y/n) scratched his head and looked out over the sea. "You'll tell me when you're ready, won't you?"

Ruben gave the faintest of nods. But of course he could not imagine ever feeling ready to tell him his secrets. In truth, Ruben hardly even deserved him. Ruben was ... Nothing but an outcast. A freak. Damaged beyond repair.

Ruben was unworthy of his time. The very thought of that brought tears to his eyes, and he looked away from (y/n) to hide them. But he couldn't hide the sobs that shook him.

"Ruben." Ruben rubbed the tears from his eyes. "Ruben, look, you need to tell me. You're a mess!"

"I've already been alone once, and I don't think I could stand it again!"

"But you won't be! You have me, don't you?"

"There's a reason... I am the way I am. A dark secret hidden deep in my past that I wanted to keep from you. I just... I don't want to burden you with that. It's all worthless..."

"It's not worthless. If it's about you, it's important to me. Tell me."

"It's... I'm..." Ruben's shoulders shook, and he buried his face in his hands. "Forget it! Let's just..."

(y/n) put an assuring arm around Ruben's shoulders and brought him toward himself. "Hey... hey. It's all right... I'm here. I'm here."

After a few moments, they found themselves walking down the beach again. Ruben couldn't stop thinking about his worst memory. It plagued him endlessly -- while he was far from (y/n) and while he was near. It threatened to consume him. When Ruben had let the faintest hints slip in the moments before, it had already taken taken so much of his will.

With concern, (y/n) turned his spotless pools toward Ruben. "Ruben? What's wrong?"

"(y/n)... it's..."

And at that moment everything came together, all of the magic and the hurt that had been building that day, and he locked his orbs with his and whispered, "You can tell me."

It was like a floodgate burst, or some barrier of fear had been struck down. Ruben shook his head and everything came out at once. "I... I keep remembering it.... That day. (y/n), I can't help myself! I don't want to think about it... it hurts, (y/n). But even when I sleep, it comes back to me in my dreams. I can't forget, not for a moment.... Not a moment's peace.

(y/n) listened silently and solemnly. At last, when all the words had left Ruben and he was at a loss for words, (y/n) reached out to him and took a deep breath to whisper back, "Ruben... that's awful. It wish that weren't how it is. I wish I could say more. Ruben...." Ruben's eyes began to burn, and he abruptly pulled (y/n) into a fierce embrace. (y/n)'s spheres widened at first, but then he too felt overwhelmed by emotion and succumbed to the warmth of Ruben's touch.

"You," Ruben whispered, his breath hot on (y/n)'s ear. "As long as you're here, I... I can make it."They held each other as tears trickled down cheeks and dripped onto the shifting sands to be carried away into the sea. With time and soothing embraces, their pain dissipated into a mist swept out by the ocean breeze and into the setting sun.

They basked in each other's quiet companionship for a few moments.

"Look... it's the sunset."

Ruben lifted his head at (y/n)'s words to behold the dying sun's tangerine radiance. "Mm."

After a moment of silence, (y/n) said quietly and seriously, "It's destiny, isn't it. Us, together."

Ruben clasped (y/n)'s calloused hand and murmured in response, "I'm... so lucky."

(y/n) brought their clasped hands to his lips. "As long as the world goes on, as long as time flows... we will be together."

Ruben sighed with contentment and brought (y/n) closer. He gazed at the beautiful tawny rays of the falling sun, thinking about everything that had transpired on this day and all that would pass between them.

"I love you, (y/n)."

"I love you too, Ruben."

Their lips met, and cinerescent strands met (e/c) colored ones, aflame in the dying light. The sand was their witness and the rumbling ocean their approving audience, and (y/n), his eternally faithful lover. Ruben thought to himself that nothing had ever been so perfect for him as this.

... Thus concludes our tale.
