Chapter 1

All I ever wanted was for the life to be better,much better than it was back home. I dreamt of living life to the fullest dinning until one o' clock and having fun. To get a good education and prove that life evolves from the ghetto,but what I thought would be a clean slate in my life turned out to be a dark empty tunnel that had crushed my dreams and became a never ending road block for me as I stared my perpetrator in his large hazel eyes as he stood over the stove with a big iron in his pale muscular hands. He was preparing to torture me again for not carrying out one of his menial tasks. As I took In all this my mind drifted back to my little board house in Jamaica

"Mandy,Mandy,come ere!", I heard my mother hollering from the verandah.

"Coming",I replied as I made my way towards my mother who was dressed in a pink tank top and a pair of jeans short which was fitted tightly to her dark skin.

"Yes mommy?"

"Sit I need to talk wid yuh", she ordered me as she shifted uncomfortably in the white wooden chair

"well yuh know mi not working and is mi one wid the three a unuh,suh I thought it would be best if yuh guh  live with yuh aunty and uncle a canada and beta yuhself."But a not forcing nothing on yuh, a will gi yuh all the time yuh need to decide."

"Time mommy?!,I don't need time,a guh miss unuh bad bad but nuff opportunity deh there for me a Canada, and mi can come back come help yuh out wid Aron and Tiana".

My heart sank as I watch my mother trying to hold back the now flowing tears from her beautiful Jade eyes.

" Mandy mi sorry",my mother splurged out.

"For what?"

"For not being the mom I ought to be,for smoking around you guys,for not being able to control my drinking addiction,for not being there for you guys,mi just sorry".

" It's OK mom",I consoled her", "things will get beta a promise ".

My mom; Petrina Hillbert was not as fortunate as most mothers.She was raised in the ghetto and fell pregnant at a very early age to one of the iglers in the community, who had sweared to her that he was protected when they engaged in sexual intercourse ,and that he loved her very much and that doing this was an indication of his love for her. My mom was not wise and may not have known that this would be the consequence of her actions. Nine months later,she gave birth to me and decided to share the news with my father who she did not see during her pregnancy. After revealing the news to him ,he denied being the father and that it was not possible. He also had the audacity to go on futher to say that the only reason she came to him saying this was because she wanted his money. So now my mother was jobless,uneducated and had me go take care of. After having my brother Aron a year later she saw the urgent necessity to find a job to continue raising the both of us. She tried getting every job you could think of but was rejected by them all because she had not finished and consequently was uneducated. Consequently she decided to take on a common job in the community which was prostitution. With the little money she started earning She built a small board house in the Barbados ghetto where she was raised and used the remaining money to send us to school .This was before she started using the money to purchase weed and liquor.My little sister tiana was conceived through prostitution and was very sickly .Knowing all this; the struggles my mom was facing and the little money she earns I thought it best to take some of the trouble and expense from her and go live with my more fortunate relatives abroad.So this was the reason for my hasty decision.
A few minutes later I went inside leaving my mother still in tears and distress on the verandah smoking a cigarette.
