"Can I help you dear?" It's the lady behind the front desk. The plaque on her desk reads "Mrs. K. Helix".
"Yes, please. i've come to collect my schedual." I say, relieved my voice is steady, not shaking like how I felt.
"Scheduals will be handed out at home room." Mrs Helix explains.
"Oh, ok." I reply, trying to act as if it didn't matter, even though I can feel my face go red. "Thank you."
"No problem." Smiles Mrs Helix as she returns to her paperwork. I turn to leave, but something catches my eye. I walk closer to find it's a huge glass case, filled with shining trophies. There's old ones made out of wood, standing next to newer ones with plaques that date back to last year. I look up at them in awe. Dancing trophies, singing trophies, sporting trophies. Mostly sporting trophies. Every single award I can imagine a school can get is here, as well as many others.
I sense someone come up behind me. I slowly turn around and look up. This person is huge, so tall his face is in shaddow. Or maybe I'm just really short. His broad shoulders block out the light coming from the fluroescent light bulb above the front door.
'He's gotta be a rugby player.' I think to myself. I step back to get a better look at this person. He doesn't have dark, scary features at all. His face is cheerful, his eyes are blue and he's really tan. He's also got that sense of authority about him.
"Uh, hi." I manage to squeak out. Great. He gives a great booming laugh and grins down at me, showing a mouthful of strong, white teeth.
"You must be new here." He states in a deep voice. He holds out his hand. I take it gingerly and shake it. There's a shiny badge on his chest that reads, "Mr Stevenson, Principal of XCC." Well I was right about the authority bit.
"What's your name, squirt?" He asks.
"Lee Grove." I reply softly.
"Lee, huh? That wouldn't be short for Karlee, would it?" He questions, rubbing his chin. I look up in surprise.
"How did you know?" I ask with mild surprise. He gives another booming laugh.
"Not many students come from other countries, you know." He grins. Oh. Well that's a bit obvious. I look down again. I feel like an idiot.
"Well, you'd better run. Class starts in 10 minutes." Mr Stevenson says. He turns and walks away. I make my way out of the office and follow the mob of people to a huge undercover area. There's a sign up on the wall that reads, 'GOA.'
"Hi. You look kinda lost. You alright?" Says a perky little voice in my ear. I turn around and see a girl around my age standing next to me. She'sll taller than me, as most people are, and has bouncy red hair that reaches her mid back.
"You alright?" She asks again. "I'm Molly."
"I'm Lee." I say softly.
"Are you starting year 8 this year?"
"Yeah."
"Awesome! I'm in Kondari, what house are you in?" I stare at her. She's so full of life, I can tell she loves to talk.
"Buthu." I reply. We talk for a couple more minutes before the bell rings.
"Shoot!" Cries Molly. "We're late!!" She grabs my hand and pulls me down a hall way and into a classroom. We sit down at the back and wait. A kid is standing at the door, nervously peering out the door. He suddenly yells out,
"Look out! She's coming!!" He sprints back to his seat and everyone falls silent. All of a sudden all we can hear is the click clack of heels coming down the hall. Everyone looks frightened. What now?
