“A-Amazing!” silver orbs widened at the small city below from the small spaceship. Peering over the edge she caught a glimpse of a tiny utopia city surrounded by an olden down that resembled something along the lines of “old Japan.” From the floating aircrafts that drifted around the tall buildings to the small mobiles that scattered over all the small roads; the place seemed so peaceful.
She looked up from the sudden rumbling of the ship and she had realized they had landed. Jumping out of her seat; she hastily grabbed her black bass power gig bag, strapping it firmly over her shoulder and made her way to the front, her black suitcase trailing right behind her. After thanking the driver; she stepped out of the ship greeted by the warm sunlight on her skin.
Turning her gaze around; she studied her surroundings. Everyone seemed to be hurrying off and onto different aircrafts to their own destination. From the corner of her eye she spotted a small yellow car with a bright colored sign that read, “Taxi” on the top. She quickened her pace in that direction. Peering through the window she saw an older man in his late thirties. He had short brown hair and wore a simple brown Japanese style shirt and matching pants. She couldn’t see the color of his eyes due to the dark sunglasses perched on his nose.
She knocked on the passenger window softly trying to get his attention. He turned his head in her direction and she waved. He quickly got out of the driver’s seat and faced her with a large grin. “Hello! Are you looking for a taxi ride?” he asked his voice filing with hope and excitement.
Taken back by his enthusiasm she nodded hesitantly and the man took her suitcase from her hands and proceeded to load it into the back trunk. While he did that she made her way into the back seats; tucking her bass bag first carefully and settling beside it, closing the door firmly. Buckling the strap over her shoulder and across her waist; the driver hopped into the driver’s seat and started the car. He slowly pulled out of the lot and headed down the road. “Where is your destination?” he asked.
“Oh um…” she pulled out a small crumbled piece of paper from her pocket. “The… Kabuki District please,” she requested. “The hotel near the…” she squinted closely at the paper. “Shin… sen… gumi…” she pronounced slowly.
The man seemed to pale at her words but he didn’t take his eyes from the road. “You are not from around here are you?” he asked.
She shook her head. “I am here for vacation and to see some of the sights,” she smiled softly.
The man nodded glancing at her through the rearview mirror. “My name is Hasegawa, Taizou but you may call me Taizou but many people seem to call me Madao,” he chuckled lightly.
“Madao?” her eyebrows furrowed in confusion at the term.
“I was once a government official but I eventually lost my job,” he explained not looking back at her. “I seem to have terrible luck with jobs and I can never seem to keep a job long enough. The taxi business was the only opening at the time and as you can see, not many people take taxis anymore.” He sighed deeply. His car pulled up in front of a large compound and a wide courtyard. “We are here, the Shinsengumi headquarters.”
She sat quietly, not budging from her spot. Her face scrunched up, deep in thought. “Well,” she began. “All of us have our upturns and downfalls in life. It is one of the evidence that show us that we are alive,” she stated before getting out of the car. She carefully pulled out her bass bag and popped open the trunk to grab her suitcase before Hasegawa could say or do anything.
Dragging the heavy suitcase on the graveled road; she knocked on his front window trying to get him to roll it down. When she did she lowered herself down to his level and replied, “But the trick is to enjoy your ups to the fullest. Sometimes you need to stop worrying and doubting yourself.” She pulled out her wallet and gave him xxx yen. “Have faith in yourself, Mr. Hasegawa, things shall work out later,” she smiled, turned around and began walking away waving her hand in the air as a farewell.
Hasegawa stared after the girl with an amused expression. “That girl,” he sighed pulling out a small white stick and he lit the cigarette; breathing out the smoke from his mouth and nose. He chuckled. “Mr. Hasegawa. It’s been a while since someone has called me that.”
