he sat next to her on the bus that day. it wasn't really an accident, but it wasn't on purpose either, there weren't really many seats remaining, and his friends were already paired off.
he slid into the seat next to her, and she slid closer to the window. he didn't really look at her until they were on the highway; her eyes closed and breath soft. and out of the corner of the eye he caught a glimpse of her left hand tracing something on her knee.
he watched for a little, unsure of what it was of, but something drew him in. before he could really think about it, his right hand was over her left, and he felt her breath catch in her throat. his thumb hovered over hers, and he began to retrace the shape.
an inifinity sign, he learned later, why, he didn't know, but it was one. she sort of lulled off for a minute or two, before her hand slipped out from underneath his, and it was just his against her skin. he cleared his throat, "sorry." and removed his hand. she readjusted herself, sitting up more, and barely audible, said, "no, it's fine. don't stop."
and so she closed her eyes again, and it wasn't a long wait until his hand was there and he was tracing the figure eight into her knee. fairly soon, though, her eyelids felt heavier and her head was resting on his shoulder. he turned his head slightly to look over at her, and felt her shiver, because his breath was hot on her shoulder.
he sat next to her on the bus that day. and found himself tracing a symbol he didn't care or know existed. and found himself loving a girl he didn't know cared.
